017.04 "It was in 1531-2 that the fourth Earl Marischal obtained a charter for marking the town of Kincardine the principal and capital burgh of the County how shortly and sorrily it maintained that position is proved by the Acts of Parliament, for these Show that in less than eighty years after it was made the county town the Sheriff and his deputies petitioned for the removal of the Courts to Stonehaven, in consequence of the extreme poverty of the accommodation at Kincardine, there being neither a tolbooth, nor any place for 'parties to ludge in for their intertenement' in which state, it is said, matters had continued 'mony zeiris'" (Memorials of Angus & Mearns.)
