The parish extends in length from West by South to East by North about 4 miles, varying in breadth from about 3 miles at the Western extremity to less than a mile at other, and contains about 8½ Square Miles. It is situated in the Howe of the Mearns, the Eastern part of the Great Valley of Strathmore, and is bounded on the South-west by Marykirk, on the South-east by Garvock, and on the North-east and North-west by Fordoun. The boundary with Garvock is Somewhat indistinct following the line [continued on page 2]

(New Stat: Act: [New Statistical Account]) "Laurencekirk, the present name of the parish, was assumed from the old Kirk of Conveth having been dedicated to St Laurence. Conveth, according to Skene, means "duty paid to an Ecclesiastical Superior." (Land of the Lindsays.) "Stonehaven is the chief seat of the Sheriff Courts of the Mearns. Inverbervy is the only Royal Burgh in the Shire, and the towns of Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Fettercairn, and Auchinblae, are the larger places." (Memoirs of Angus & Mearns) "Conveth. A duty formerly paid in Scotland, to the Superior or Ecclesastical Superior. Apparently from Lat: [Latin] Convictus, Signifying ordinary food, meat, and drink, &c. especially as intended for those who lived in Society; from Con and Vivo." (Jamieson) The only object or place in the Parish which retains the ancient name, is the Small Estate, and Mill of Conveth, the property of Alexander Crombie Esqr of Thornton House.

OS1/19/14/19 Castle of Haulkerton (Site of) Castle of Haulkerton James Gavin 024.01 "The foundations of the old Castle of Haulkerton are barely traceable". (Sketch of the History and Antiquities of the Mearns) "Traces of the foundation of the Castle of Haulkerton are to be seen in the Wood adjoining the farm house of the Mains, built into the offices of which are two stones taken from the castle. One is a corbel, bearing an ill carved female head, and the date 1556, which relates to the time of Sir Alexander, father of the first Falconer of Phesdo, and the other is a plain slab, initialed L,A,F, and dated 1648 - the time of the first Lord Falconer". (Memorials of Angus & Mearns) The Site of the Castle is near the West Corner of Haulkerton Plantation, the ground is slightly elevated but the foundation of the Building is all taken away with the exception of two or three large stones which appear to have formed part of the foundation wall. A circular tumulus of rock immediately adjoining is to this day called the 'Chapel Knap', and the 'Mill of Conveth' the only place which retains the ancient name of Conveth is Scarcely half a mile distant." (New Stat Act [Statistical Account] P. [Page] 129) The Chapel Knap is well known, and Mr Brodie who pointed out the site took down the object here called "a circular tumulus of rock"; he states that it appeared to have been used as a "kiln, or a Cooking place" on account of the ashes &c being found about the artificial erection of the Stones. Nothing of a Sepulchral nature was found. Mr Brodie supposes that a Chapel had stood near the place as marked. The Knap is a Small Spur or Point between two small streams near the Farm House of Scotston. There is no track or trace to mark the site of the Chapel, the ground being all Cultivated. There is nothing on the ground to indicate the Site of a Building. -

(Town Clerk) 024.05 A considerable market town consisting chiefly of Cottage houses with a few of a Superour quality and all having outhouses, gardens &c attached here also is a good Town Hall, Parish Church, Free Church, Episcopal Chapel, Independent Chapel and a room or meeting house for the Baptists, and Three Schools, also Three good Hotels, and Three ordinary public houses, - a market is held here every fortnight for Cattle and grain. The town owes its rise and present appearance to the late Lord Gardenston, who being proprieter of the lands of Johnston on which it is placed gave every encouragement for people to build and reside here, and as a further inducement, obtained a Charter for this town, which made it a free Burgh of Barony, and though by its Charter, is entitled to hold a weekly market there has never as yet been any held. from its charter bearing date 1781 the following is an extract Laurencekirk so far as already built or hereafter to be built upon the lands within the Special bounds and limits viz. within eight hundred and thirty eight yards on each Side of the Kings highway which at this time forms the principal Street of the Village which by these presents is declared to be the territory of the Burgh of Barony (beyond which the rights jurisdiction and privileges conferred upon the inhabitants and community thereof shall not extend) and is now and in all time coming to be called the burgh of barony of Laurencekirk with all powers liberties privileges and jurisdictions whatever pertaining and belonging or which ought to pertain and belong to any free and independent burgh of barony which might be erected in Scotland Since the date of the act of parliment in the twentieth year of the reign of King George the Second entitled An act for taking away and abolishing the heritable jurisdiction in that part of Great Britain called Scotland &c. &c. with full power and privilege to the burgesses [continued on page 42]
