"The ancient name of this Parish was Conveth, but in the course of last Century it came to be known only by the name of Laurencekirk, originally applicable only to the Kirk-town, and derived from the dedication of the Church to St. Laurence.
The parish extends in length from West by South to East by North about 4 miles, varying in breadth from about 3 miles at the Western extremity to less than a mile at other, and contains about 8½ Square Miles. It is situated in the Howe of the Mearns, the Eastern part of the Great Valley of Strathmore, and is bounded on the South-west by Marykirk, on the South-east by Garvock, and on the North-east and North-west by Fordoun. The boundary with Garvock is Somewhat indistinct following the line

"of an old earthen fence known by the name of the Rae or Deer Dike of which many traces are still visible, and which probably enclosed the forest of Garvock." (New Stat: Act: [New Statistical Account])
"Laurencekirk, the present name of the parish, was assumed from the old Kirk of Conveth having been dedicated to St Laurence. Conveth, according to Skene, means "duty paid to an Ecclesiastical Superior." (Land of the Lindsays.)
"Stonehaven is the chief seat of the Sheriff Courts of the Mearns. Inverbervy is the only Royal Burgh in the Shire, and the towns of Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Fettercairn, and Auchinblae, are the larger places." (Memoirs of Angus & Mearns)
"Conveth. A duty formerly paid in Scotland, to the Superior or Ecclesastical Superior. Apparently from Lat: [Latin] Convictus, Signifying ordinary food, meat, and drink, &c. especially as intended for those who lived in Society; from Con and Vivo." (Jamieson)
The only object or place in the Parish which retains the ancient name, is the Small Estate, and Mill of Conveth, the property of Alexander Crombie Esqr of Thornton House. |

It is traditionally reported that an Episcopalian, or Roman Catholic Chapel Stood here, and the field is yet known by the name of Chapel Field. The site is well known although all traces of the building are destroyed. There is no certainty about the date of the Building but it is generally supposed to have been very old.
"There were also two small [Episcopalian] Chapels about three or four miles distant from the village, to the east and west, of which one was within this parish. These were used for some time after the Laurencekirk Chapel was opened but it is now many years since they were taken down". (New Stat Act [Statistical Account]) |

"Traces of the foundation of the Castle of Haulkerton are to be seen in the Wood adjoining the farm house of the Mains, built into the offices of which are two stones taken from the castle. One is a corbel, bearing an ill carved female head, and the date 1556, which relates to the time of Sir Alexander, father of the first Falconer of Phesdo, and the other is a plain slab, initialed L,A,F, and dated 1648 - the time of the first Lord Falconer". (Memorials of Angus & Mearns)
The Site of the Castle is near the West Corner of Haulkerton Plantation, the ground is slightly elevated but the foundation of the Building is all taken away with the exception of two or three large stones which appear to have formed part of the foundation wall. James Gavin who pointed out the Site is an old Laborer on the Mains of Haulkerton.

A circular tumulus of rock immediately adjoining is to this day called the 'Chapel Knap', and the 'Mill of Conveth' the only place which retains the ancient name of Conveth is Scarcely half a mile distant." Nothing of a Sepulchral nature was found. Mr Brodie supposes that a Chapel had stood near the place as marked. The Knap is a Small Spur or Point between two small streams near the Farm House of Scotston. There is no track or trace to mark the site of the Chapel, the ground being all Cultivated.
