017.14 There was formerly at this place a large Cairn, or Tumulus composed of loose stones and gravel the base of which was a circle of considerable extent. A section was cut down the South side which disclosed a layer of Black unctuous earth resting on what appeared to be the natural surface of the ground, mixed with this layer near the centre of the base, was a quantity of broken Urns, pieces of bone, and a number of Arrow Heads composed of Flint, and singed apparently from the effects of fire. From five to seven hundred cart loads of stone were taken from the cairn to build dykes &c. and but few traces of it remain. The people speak of it as the Druids Camp, but it has evidently been a large Cairn or Tumulus. [Signed] B. Render Corp. R.E. [Corporal Royal Engineers]
