Glenbervie House Glenbervie House See Name Sheets attached. 016.15 "When Edward I left the castle of Kincardine (in 1296) he passed to the Mountagne of 'Glowbervy'(a) or Glenbervy, the parish adjoining Fordoun on the East, and there he remained for the night. History and tradition both corroborate the fact of a castle having been at Glenbervy from a very remote period, and there is no doubt but the King made it his residence upon the occasion referred to, although the silence of the writer of the royal Diary on that particular point, might lend those unacquainted with the locality to infer that the party had rather encamped among the mountains, the designation 'Mountagne' being merely descriptive of the topographical appearance of the district. __ The old castle of Glenbervy is believed to have occupied nearly the same site, on the banks of the Bervy water as the present neat mansion house, and at the time of the King's visit it belonged to a branch of the old family of Melville. Many barons of that name did homage to Edward, and among these was the laird of Glenbervy. His submission took place at Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire on the 21st. July, and, from the writs presented by Sir Francis Palgrave, it appears that John of Stowe, parson of Glenbervy, performed the same service at the same time and place (b) ".__
