024.09 | On the Summit of the Hill of Garvock there are two large Cairns, the relics of Druidism about a mile asunder. "The larger is fifty yards in diameter and must have been a magnificent structure in its day. It had been carefully Surrounded by a ring of large blocks of freestone, which are now covered by the Stones of the Cairn falling down and over them. On the larger of the two cairns above mentioned, the late J. Farquerson Esqr. of Johnston, on whose property it lies, erected a neat hollow tower of Substantial mason-work, about thirty feet high, with a winding Staircase inside to the top from which there is a most extensive and charming View. New Statistical Account of Scotland, pages 35 & 37. All that now remains is a very large heap of loose stones at the base of the Tower. B.R. 22/6/63 |
