017.02 | A name given to a Stone standing in an arable field a little to the South of Pennywell on the Estate of Fetteresso. I have not seen any record of this stone in any of the Books on antiquities, nor can I meet with any person who knows its origin. The old men on the estate remember seeing it in the same position from their earliest recollection. It is evidently one of those objects known to antiquarians and classed by them as Monliths, or Standing Stones. This stone stands about 4 Feet above the surface of the ground, and measures at the ground 2 feet across its widest part, it is of an irregular shape, and gradually tapers to the top. There is no mark of chisel, or tool on the stone. [signed] B. Render Corpl. R.E. [Corporal Royal Engineers] 19/3/64 |
