019.04 | A little to the west of the Drumtochty Castle, and on a hill called the "Castle Hill" are the foundations of a house called the "Old Castle". It is considered to be so ancient that there is not even any tradition connected with it: but the people in the immediate neighbourhood believe it to have been a Castle, and that is all they Know about it. But judging from the extent and thickness of the walls; would convey that idea, of its having been a place of considerable importance at one time. The lime has been calcined from sea, shells [sea shells] and formed into a gross matter with coarse gravel. The walls are about 3 feet in thickness and are level with the surface; property of Andrew Gemmell Esqr. |

[Page] 66Parish of Fordoun
This has evidently been a dwelling house
at some time, the extent of the foundations
and thickness of the wall are not of sufficient
extent to shew that it was a Castle, or Tower, but
as the place is known by the name given
it had better be written on Plan in Stump
and not shewnas an antiquity.
