"On the hill above Newlands, there are the remains of what is called a Druidical Temple, and a similar one in a clump of trees near Castleton on the estate of William Forbes Esqr." (New Stat. Act. P 86) [New Statistical Account Page 86] The site of the place above mentioned is a natural elevation situated between the Farm houses of Castleton and West Mondynes on a tract of ground known by the name of the "Monk's Park". The trees mentioned above were removed about twenty years ago and the place cultivated, during the process of cultivation and partial levelling of the hillock, the workmen discovered a circle of about eight yards in diameter, built of rough Sand Stones, and in the form of an "inverted Saucer", with its centre hollowed, the outside was built in the form of a retaining wall, with Clay and Stones, the hollowed part was about six feet in diameter, and four feet deep. In the centre, and about a foot below the surface, there was found a considerable quantity of burnt ashes, fragments of bones, black Unctuous earth, and a number of Clay Urns. This place was surrounded by a Circle of large boulders, some of which were from 20 to 30 Cwt [hundredweight] each. This circle was about 40 yards in diameter, and the Stones did not stand upright, but were piled together in irregular heaps, probably this might have been done when the ground was planted.
