023.02 "The next most ancient place is Balbegno Castle, on the same estate, and Still habitable. The date of 1509 is visible on the parapet wall. The expense of Building it is said to have been so great, that the proprietor whose name was Wood was obliged to sell the lands of Balnakettle and Littlestrath, then belonging to him to enable him to complete it, Various pieces of Sculpture are exhibited in the higher parts of the Hall, Within, there is a lofty hall, the roof of which is composed of freestone, arched and groined and divided into Sixteen triangular Spaces in these are painted the names and Coats of arms of Sixteen Scotch Peers" (New Stat Act [Statistical Account])
"Balbegno Castle, with arched hall, and medalion portraits round the bartisan was erected by a cadet of the knightly house of Bonington, in Angus - the date Ano 1509 and the names of the erector I,WOD, and his wife E,IRVEIN, being carved near one of the upper Windows." (Land of the Lindsays) This Castle is now the property of Sir Thomas Gladstone Bart [Baronet], it is in good repair, but not inhabited.
