"This parish takes its name from the small river that runs along its north-east boundary, and according to Chalmers, in his Caledonia, the water of Bervie derives its name from the British Beru to flow, Berw, Berwy, a boiling or abullition. This etymology corresponds exactly with the character of the stream. A distinction between the name of the parish and the burgh may be marked by the Gaelic word Inver, which indicates the Situation of the of the town by its signification, and ought to be applied to the burgh only.
The extent of the parish in length is about 2 miles, and in breadth about 1 1/2. Its figure is quadrilateral. It is bounded towards the South and South west by the parish of Benholme, the north west by the parish of Garvock, the north and north east by the parish of Arbuthnott; the east by the parish of Kinneff; and its boundary on the South east is the German Ocean." 025.02 |
A Royal and Parliamentary Burgh Situated near the confluence of the Bervie Water with the Sea, and pleasantly situated on a rising ground, The principal buildings in the Town are the Church of the Parish. Free Church Town Hall, Oddfellow's Hall, two good Hotels, and three ordinary Public Houses. The remaining houses are principally Cottages with good gardens attached. The Houses on the whole are a good state of repair.
"King David Bruce by the violence of a storm was forced to land at the mouth of the Water of Brevie. He met with very kind treatment from the inhabitants, which so gratified and pleased him that he granted a Charter to Bervie conferring many privileges on its inhabitants. This Charter was renewed by James VI in 1595. There is no other town in the parish but the Burgh of which the principal trade is the manufacture of linen commonly called Duck or Dowlas. The retail trade carried on by merchants for the supply of the inhabitants consists of grocery goods, clothing, hardware, earthenware &c. A grain market was established here a few years ago and it has been ever since carried on with the greatest success. It commences about the close of harvest and holds every Wednesday thereafter for six months. This place has hitherto been

This name is not known by any person, but it is supposed to be the place mentioned in the Royal Charter, and called Jack's Field on Copy Draught of Common, and the authorities quoted are of this opinion
It is very probable that in ancient times when the Roman Catholic religion was the religion of the land, that a cross or rood stood here, as it is a very likely place for such an emblem, being situated on the summit of a hill over which the main road from Bervie to Laurencekirk passes, and not far from the Monastery of Inverbervie from which the hill can be seen. There are the remains of a large Cairn here where it is probable that the cross might be erected. The above is only supposition as I can not obtain any information on the subject, but the age of the name, its derivation, and the Situation and appearance of the ground, are all in favor of the above supposition. There was formerly a bog or Mire at this place which about 40 years ago was known as Peattie Bog. The ground is now all drained and under Cultivation and is not known by any name. It appears by the Copy Draught of the Common of Bervie, which was drawn in 1788 that the Undefined line which is considered to be the Royalty Boundary at this place, was at that time a property boundary between the Burgh of Bervie and the proprietor of Peattie, and from the appearance of the ground the "head of the latch" i.e. the "head of the latch"i.e. the (head of the Bog or Mire,) Can yet be traced on the ground and appears to be correctly delineated on the draught and now Shewn on the 1/2500 Scale. Mr Alexander Carr, Baillie Bervie. remembers this Bog, and states, that the whole of the ground near this was Moor and Bog 50 years ago, and on behalf of the Burgh authorities he is satisfied that this is the Place mentioned in the Charter as Magyis Cotlack. Although this name is not known by any person, from the enquiry I have made, and a careful examination of the ground I am almost certain that this is the latch referred to in the Charter, and beg to recommend for the Officer's approval that, Maggies Cotlatch,(Supposed) be written on the Plan So that the name be reclaimed for the future.

"There had formerly been a religious house here belonging to a body of Friars, as there are in the possession of the feuars, charters with such words as "Friars Dubbs." The descovery of graves by the workmen employed when the turnpike road was in making, is a further evidence of the existence of Such an Establishment, for it was near the place still known, by the name of Friars Dubbs, and it is conjectured, that these graves mark the spot where the friars had their burying ground."2 It is supposed, that the monastery stood about where the Parochial School now stands. There had formerly been a town house here, and Several Spacious Mansions, believed to be the town residences of the neighbouring lairds, but no part of these buildings now remains, yet, these circumstances Shew that the place had attracted early notice, and had been a favourite place of resort for the gentry.

"A beautiful mansion situated at the southmost point of the parliamentary boundary of the burgh, on an eminence near the sea, a date appears on the west front of it A very much effaced, but Supposed to be 1376. Its walls are very thick and full of arrow holes. and the Stones in many parts appears very much worn by the lapse of ages.
There is every appearance of its having been surrounded by a moat over which there had been a drawbridge with a portcullis near the outer gate of the Court, Several additions appear to have been made to this Castle at different periods Above a door in the Court there is a date of 1687 with initials of the proprietor Mr. Raitt who then occupied the Mansion and had made considerable additions to it, and there is in one of the principal rooms, on the stucco ceiling a coat of Arms, with the words Spero Meliora and the date of 1683. The Castle is now in a very good state of repair. and the grounds very tastefuly kept in order, and is the residence of the proprietor James Farquhar Esqr."

Camp
Camp [Note] The writer of the Statistical account has evidently let his enthusiusm get the better of his judgment, for after enquiry I find that the places named had no appearance of Camps, Forts nor Druidical Circles. Mr. Barclay of Hallgreen who removed two of the objects states they were nothing but the remains of Circular Sheep Folds, And the remaining Circle has not the slightest resemblance to a Camp or Druidical Circle. It is a small portion of Moor ground which was enclosed and planted by the Uncle of the present proprietor, as an experiment to see if Fir Wood would grow on the Hill. So its antiquity is something like "Oldbuck's Kairn of Kinprunes," as the proprietor, "Minds the bigging o't."
