It had obviously been at one period used as a place of worship by the Roman Catholic's as it was furnished with a font for holy water with an incense alter and with a niche or Small press in the wall which is conjectured to have been the receptacle of Sacred relics."(New Stat. The Church [Note] The church which stands nearly in the centre and most agreeable part of the parish, is an old irregular Gothic building. On the East, a part is raived higher than the rest, which formerly served for the choir, and still retains the name, though it has long been used as a burying place.
The remains of a font are still to be seen at one of the church doors, and other relics of Superstition, which evidently shew that the whole has been built before the Reformation." (Old Statistical Account Vol.[Old Statistical Account Volume] 15. P [Page] 224)
"The kirk was in the diocese of St Andrews, and during the time of Lundie (of Benholm Castle) the Monks of Arbroath had a gift of a Chalder of victual furth of these lands . This occurred in 1398." (Land of the Lindsays P. [Page] 320)
