006.06 The seat of Sir James Burnett Bart [Baronet] is situated on a green bank at the end of a ridge of wooded rocks, and embosomed among fine trees, it is an imposing baronial structure consisting of a tall square tower having ornamental turrets, in the Scotch castellated style, and of some modern additions. The walls are massive, and it was formerly considered capable of defence. The date 1596 is cut on stone on the castle, but the statistical account says it was built in 1528.
"In 1528, the present castle of Crathes was built by a son of the above Alexander Burnett." Statistical Account, p. [page] 338
