My Dear Sir
You would greatly oblige me
by giving me information at
your early convenience in what
grounds "Banchory" is said to
be a market town. Does any
charter exist which gives the
necessary permission for markets
to be held there? I find that
10 markets are held annually
at the Market Stance, one
of them being still known as

I was not aware that
Banchory was styled a
"Market Town". I have
the right, under certain
ancient charters, of holding
markets and levying cus-
toms very near the
village.
In feudal Times
a small body of armed
men always attended at
the markets in order to
