Both house and chapel were built by Mr Robert Buchan, about 90 years ago." (Macfarlane's Geographical Collection M.S. [Manuscript] A.D. 1725.) "The present church at Portlethen, was a Chapel previous to the Reformation." (Memorials of Angus & Mearns. N. Stat. Act. [New Statistical Account] " Church at Portlethen, built under King Charles I., by Mr Robert Buchan of Portlethen, about A.D. 1635." - (Collections on the Shires of Aberdeen & Banff. Page 264.) "Portlethen Church", is a plain Stone building, standing on an eminence about 1/2 a Mile west of the Village of Portlethen, it was formerly called the "Red Church" from the reddish color of the Stones of which it was built, and is supposed to have been used as a Roman Catholic chapel previous to the Reformation. The Old Chapel, or "Red Church", being in bad repair was taken down about 21 years ago and the present Church was built upon the old foundations. - Portlethen is a Quoad Sacra Parish and there is a Manse and Glebe in possession of the Minister, (See Manse Plan 8/5.) The present Minister of the Parish is the Revd [Reverend] William Law. |
