"Authentic documents in the possession of the Viscount Arbuthnott afford the most distinctive evidence that previous to the twelfth century, the name of that family and of the district was Aberbothenothe, that, about 1335, it had become Aberbuthnot, and about 1443, Arbuthnott. Aber denotes the influx of a river into the Sea, or of a smaller Stream into a larger, Both, Bothena a dwelling, a baronial residence, Scotice 'The House,' Neth or Neoth-ea (Jamieson's Scott Dict. below the Barons house'. This derivation is perfectly applicable to the Site of the ancient Castle, and the present house, the residence of the Arbuthnott family, who have been from time immemorial proprietors of the greater part of this parish. The house stands on the narrow point of a projecting eminence overlooking the water of Bervie as it flows through a beautiful valley on the South, close beneath it on the east, a rapid rivulet, formerly of considerable size, runs through a deep hollow and joins the Bervie a few hundred yards below.
This parish contains from 14 to 15 Square miles of Surface. Its greatest extent from east to west is about 5 miles, and from north to South about 4 1/2. It is bounded on the west by the water of Bervie, which Separates it from the parish of Fordoun, on the north by the Forthy, which separates it from Glenbervie, on the north east by Dunnottar, on the east by Kinneff on the South by the parish of Bervie, from which it is separated by the water of Bervie for 2 1/2 miles after which it turns to the South west on which side it is bounded by the parish of Garvock." Mr Ross Tenant of Chapel Croft states that the late Lord Arbuthnott informed him that the place, as marked, was the "Site of a chapel." There is the outline of what appears to have been the foundation of a building visible on the ground, and near it is a Spring of water called "Chapel Well" or "Holy Well." The present Lord Arbutnott can not give any information on the subject personally, but he considers the above statement to be substantially correct. There is no mention of this in the Parochial documents.

"There is no visible remain of antiquity within this parish except some lines of a rampart thrown up in a regular manner upon a projecting point near to Bervy River, which is said to have been the residence of a family of the name of Gellendris who bequeathed the property to the Archbishop of St Andrews, to whose successors a feu duty is still payable by the present proprietor. But this fortification has as much the appearance of being Roman, and bears the general name of the Castledykes to this day." (Old Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 11. P. [Page] 392)
Mr. Francis Jolly the tenant of the ground States that he took down this place about 15 years ago and at that time it was very formidable looking, there was a ditch on the West side, and a large rampart on the East side. The outside of the rampart was faced with large stones, and backed up with earth from the ditch. The Site of both, rampart and ditch can be traced on the ground, the outlines still remaining very distinct. The Situation is on a ridge near the Chapel Croft, the Crest of the ridge appears to have been cut completely through by the ditch. I called on Lord Arbuthnott relative to this time, but he can not give any information relative to the origin of this, what it was originally is mere conjecture, some people suppose it was erected during the Feudal times, and used as an outpost by the Arbuthnotts, when they were at War with the Laird of Castle of Allardice. It is situated about half way between the two houses and the rampart faces Allardice.

On the summit of the hill there are the remains of a Reive, or Camp and judging from the Stones &c. that remain it appears to have been very strongly built. I have not been able to meet with any person (except the farmer at Montgoldrum,) that knows anything about it, nor is it mentioned in the Statistical accounts, but the Tenant of the ground states that he has heard of it spoken of as the Roman Camp. There is no doubt whatever that it has been erected for defence. It is circular and composed principally of Stones, and though small, from its position &c. would be very useful as a Hill Fort, and from its great similarity to other Forts &c. that I have met with I have no doubt whatever that this has been a Caledonian, or British camp. There is a large Stone on the summit of this hill about which I have not seen any record, but the Tenant Mr D Greig states that he has heard it said that "it was a place where the druids worshiped". From the locality and erect position of the Stone it is evidently one of those objects known to antiquarians by the name of Standing Stone.

In Arable Field
In Clump of Whins |
021.09 |
In a field on the Farm of Millplough a little to the north of the steading there stands a very large Stone. It is of the conglomerate Species and has evidently been erected to commemorate some remarkable event, the records of which are apparently lost, as I have not been able to collect any thing regarding it except that it is stated by Mr Cromar of Gobbs that he has heard it stated that a King was Slain there, and he has heard it called Grey Stone.
A Short distance from the above named Stone and situated in a Clump of Whins there is another large Stone evidently a Memoriial Stone but about which I have not seen any record nor can I obtain any tradition regarding it. What the origin of the above may have been is only conjecture but from what I have seen, and read about similar objects I consider they are either the remains of some Driudical Cairn or Temple, and what are classed by Antiquarians under the name of "Standing Stones."
[Signed] B. Render Corp. R.E. [Corporal Royal Engineers]
10th Decr [December] 1863
"Some of these Cairns which still remain are called Cat Stones, and the same name which seems plainly to be derived from the British Cad or the Scoto-Irish Cath, a battle, is applied in several instances to single Stones. Numerous stones of memorial, or rude Pillars apparently very ancient, and raised by the same people as the Cat Stones exist in every district, and in allusion to their upright position are traditionally called Standing Stones

"Standing Stones, they are in their natural State without the mark of any tool, and of course are very various in form, they frequently appear Single, and frequently also in groups of two, three, four, and even a greater number, and in general from their wanting inscriptions and Sculpturings, they have failed to transmit the events which they were reared to commemorate." It is traditionally reported that a Chapel Stood at the place marked, and a portion of ground near the site is Supposed to be the Site of the burying ground, as the corn, grass &c. which grows on the place is always of a richer nature than in any other part of the field. I called on Lord Arbuthnott relative to this, and he Said that he had heard it Spoken of as the Site of a Chapel, and that the Surrounding names appear to verify the tradition. There is no mention of the above in any of the Parochial documents. |

An aisle attached to the church on the south east side, which is the burying ground of the Arbuthnott family.
"This aisle was rebuilt by Sir Robert Arbuthnott of that Ilk, in 1505, of finely hewn ashlar. The entrance is on the west side by an arched door. On the south side are four buttresses of carved stone work, but the ravages of the weather have greatly injured the beauty of the workmanship, particularly on the south west part of the building. The lower part, which is arched was originally dedicated as a chapel to the Virgin Mary: and the upper, which is accessible by a narrow winding stair in a round tower on the north west corner, was intended to be a sleeping chamber for the priest who officiated at her altar.

"The church is situated a little way from the north bank of the Bervie. It is about three miles distant from farthest extremity of the parish. The date of its erection is not known. In 1505 Sir Robert Arbuthnott repaired and improved the west gable, erecting on it a round tower to which he presented two bells. The joining of the earlier and later workmanship is still apparent in the building, so that the church is not less than 333 years old, and is probably upwards of 400. It is at present in a pretty good state of repair, and affords accommodation for 440 persons." (New Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] P. [Page] 163)

James Edwards Mill of Allardice |
021.13 |
The only information that can be obtained on this is from James Edwards, Mill of Allardyce, who states that when the field was drained there was found on the hillock as marked 1 on trace several stone coffins which were allowed to remain as found, he does not remember whether any of them were opened. In the old Gravel Pit at place marked 2 on trace there was found a Stone coffin containing pieces of bone and black earth. The coffin was removed but the hole in the side of the Pit which contained the coffin can still be seen. |

A small piece of Arable ground on the boundary of the Estates of Allardice and Arbuthnott. It is said that the name originated in a dispute, as to the proper ownership, each party claiming it. The proprietor of Allardice stated it was part of his property, and the proprietor of Arbuthnott claimed it as his. It is now recognized as part of the Arbuthnott Estate and attached to the farm of Kirkton. |

"The castle of Allardice is a baronial building of moderate pretentions, picturesquely situated on the north bank of Bervie Water, about a mile above the bridge of Inverbervie from which perhaps it is best seen. It appears to have been mostly built about the time of the marriage of Sir John Allardice with Lady Graham, and having been deserted by the family, soon afterwards, the estates fell to the Barclays, it was occupied towards the beginning of this century by a woodforester. Latterly it became uninhabitable and almost a ruin, but having been repaired within the last twenty years, it is now the residence of the farmer."

This name is not known by any person, but it is supposed to be the place mentioned in the Royal Charter, and called Jack's Field on copy of Draught of Common, and the authorities quoted are of this opinion. It is very probable that in ancient times when the Roman Catholic Religion was the religion of the land that a cross or rood stood here, as it is a very likely place for such an emblem being situated on the summit of a hill over which the main road from Bervie to Laurencekirk passes, and not far from the Monastery of Inverbervie from which the hill can be seen. There are the remains of a large Cairn here where it is probable that the cross might be erected. The above is only supposition as I cannot obtain any information on the subject, but the age of the name, its derivation, and the situation and appearance of the ground, are all in favor of the above supposition. |
