021.13 "There is no visible remain of antiquity within this parish except some lines of a rampart thrown up in a regular manner upon a projecting point near to Bervy River, which is said to have been the residence of a family of the name of Gellendris who bequeathed the property to the Archbishop of St Andrews, to whose successors a feu duty is still payable by the present proprietor. But this fortification has as much the appearance of being Roman, and bears the general name of the Castledykes to this day." (Old Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 11. P. [Page] 392)
Mr. Francis Jolly the tenant of the ground States that he took down this place about 15 years ago and at that time it was very formidable looking, there was a ditch on the West side, and a large rampart on the East side. The outside of the rampart was faced with large stones, and backed up with earth from the ditch. The Site of both, rampart and ditch can be traced on the ground, the outlines still remaining very distinct. The Situation is on a ridge near the Chapel Croft, the Crest of the ridge appears to have been cut completely through by the ditch. I called on Lord Arbuthnott relative to this time, but he can not give any information relative to the origin of this, what it was originally is mere conjecture, some people suppose it was erected during the Feudal times, and used as an outpost by the Arbuthnotts, when they were at War with the Laird of Castle of Allardice. It is situated about half way between the two houses and the rampart faces Allardice.
