It is supposed that this name is derived from the Latin Castrum, signifying a Camp or fortified town, and General Roy in his military antiquities has stated that "the most likely place to examine and search for such vestiges would appear to be the south side of the valley near Laurencekirk Keir or Drumlithie". 020.07 | "Near the Hogs-hole from which the large Deer Horns already noticed were dug up, a stone hatchet and the metal head of a battle-axe were found. The head of a smaller battle axe was thrown up about two years ago, in digging a drain on the farm of Townhead". (New. Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] P. [Page] 161.) The Hog's Hole was formerly a Peat Bog, but the ground is now drained and cultivated, I have not been able to meet with any person who knows anything about the Battle axes. |
