Mont Goldrum or Camp Hill | Mont Goldrum or Camp Hill Mont Goldrum or Camp Hill Mont Goldrum or Camp Hill |
Mr. John Milne (Montgoldrum) Mr William Hall (Greenden) Mr H. Mitchell (N. [North] Craighill) Mr J Carr (Montgoldrum) |
021.05 | A conspicuous hill feature on the Farm of Montgoldrum, which is generally spoken of by the people in the District as Montgoldrum Hill, but by the best authorities it is called Mont Goldrum, and likewise, Camp Hill. |
Camp | Camp | Mr John Milne | 021.05 | On the summit of the hill there are the remains of a Reive, or Camp and judging from the Stones &c. that remain it appears to have been very strongly built. I have not been able to meet with any person (except the farmer at Montgoldrum,) that knows anything about it, nor is it mentioned in the Statistical accounts, but the Tenant of the ground states that he has heard of it spoken of as the Roman Camp. There is no doubt whatever that it has been erected for defence. It is circular and composed principally of Stones, and though small, from its position &c. would be very useful as a Hill Fort, and from its great similarity to other Forts &c. that I have met with I have no doubt whatever that this has been a Caledonian, or British camp. Murraystone Hill | Murraystone Hill Murraystone Hill Murraystone Hill |
Mr. D. Greig (Leys of Allardice) Mr. J. Carr Mr. J. Milne |
021.05 | A small hill feature on the Estate of Barras near Leys, I have not been able to meet with any person who knows the origin of the name. |
Standing Stone | Standing Stone | 021.05 | There is a large Stone on the summit of this hill about which I have not seen any record, but the Tenant Mr D Greig states that he has heard it said that "it was a place where the druids worshiped". From the locality and erect position of the Stone it is evidently one of those objects known to antiquarians by the name of Standing Stone. (See remarks &c 21/9) [Signed] B. Render Corp. R.E.
