Exr. [Ordnance Survey Examiner] from the meaning given viz [videlicet] "gravel Island": the Examiner (field) wrote it "Gairneal", which was probably an error of transcription for Gormuil: an example of how false names are sometimes written. Gormul in Norse would mean "mud lump", a more probable Etymology than "Gorm-shùil" = blue-eye, the meaning given by the 2 boatmen. |
