This name applies to the ruins of an old Castle situated on a high cliff overhanging the seashore near the most northern extremity of this Island. It is said to have been formerly occupied by Danish or Norwegian Pirates, and by them first built. But the Lords or Chiefs of the Clan MacDonald are said to have pulled down what remains of the original building and in its stead to erect the strong and stately edifice of Duntulm Castle. The interior of the building is now nearly all level with the ground and can only be indistinctly traced but a great portion of the outer, or courtyard wall is still standing to a height of several feet. It has evidently been a place of considerable pretensions to resistance in its day, from its total inaccessibility by sea, and the fact of its having been guarded on the land side by a ditch or moat which is now almost level with the surrounding surface. It is not known in the district when it was first erected nor yet when last occupied. Vague traditions are all that is known about it in this part of Island. Captain Fraser proptr [proprietor] |

This name signifies "shelter or seclusion", but some maintain that it means the place of mourning or lamentation in consequence of a vague tradition in the locality of a number of people having been found dead at this place at some remote period. It is situated on the east side of "Meall na Sunamaich" and about six miles from Uig. It is approached by a foot path passing near the base of a darK cliff which leads the traveller to the mouth, or entrance of a precipitous and rugged incline, on reaching the top of the slope you find yourself amongst a plateau of Green Grass, enclosed on every side by high columnar shaped rocKs. It is considered a great natural curiosity, and visited by stranger from all parts of the civilised world. |
