This name is applied to as island situate on the south coast of Skye about 3 1/2 miles east from the extreme point of Rudh' an Dùnain. The coast round the island is very rocky & dangerous for mariners, but there are two excellent natural harbours, one on the north side & one on the south which would afford good shelter more especially the one on the north side. There are 27 famiies on the island with a popuation of 120. The people are very poor, & have wretched bad houses, they depend chiefly on lobster fishing. The island is covered with inferior heathy pasture and is under sheep. Mr Cameron of Glen Brittle is the farmer, & Macleod of Macleod is proprietor. It is the parish of Bracadale * * It is 3 miles in length and 1 1/2 miles in width. |
