This name applies to a small island on which is situated the lighthouse known as "Monach", in the Anglicised form, this name is known as "Shillay", and the name "Monach" is applicable to the whole group consisting of six great and smnall, although each has a distinct name of its own, property of Sir John Orde. It belongs to the parish of North Uist.
Shillay is supposed to have been the only Island of the Group known as "Monach (= Monk) Island" there having been one time on it a Monastery, or supposed to be such, all traces of which have disappeared. All the islands of the group were, and still are by many of the people of the Islands & district, called "Heisker". But there being an Island called "Haskeir" some 12 or 14 miles to the north of this group, the name Monach Islands has gradually come into use as more easily distinguished from the other Island Haskeir than the name Heisker is. |

Since the word "right' is a bit longer (given the space remaining on that line) and as the immiediately following loch is also to the left, I guess Loch Airidh Mairi Ruadh must also be to the left of that road (no map I can find has Loch Airidh Mairi Ruadh on it). That same fold also cuts off the word after "red" in the meaning of the loch's name. The word cut off is "Mairi" which most commonly translates as "Mary", so I have put that.
In the 'Description' for Loch an Fhaing Bhuidhe, a fold in the page cuts off just how far it is from the road to Lochmaddy. However, as the first word on the next line is "chain" not "chains", I guess the missing word is "a" chain (or possibly "1"). |

This name applies to a group of small islands, six in number, distant in a westerly direction from North Uist, about six miles, Their total area is about 800 acres, one fourth of which is good pasture or under cultivation, the remainder being a sort of rough grass commonly called "Bent". The principal object of interest in these islets is the lighthouse which is situated on one of the westerly of this group called Shillay. This building was erected in the Year 1863 , and lighted for the first time on the 1st of February 1864. Since then, it has doubtless been the means of saving many lives, and property, as shipwrecks were of frequent occurrence previous to its erection and in most cases attendee with great loss of life the place of internment of some of these unfortunate mariners is to be seen on two or three parts of these islands. There is a school maintained by a society of the ladies of Edinburgh, where the ordinary branches of English education are taught. There are 19 families which amount in population to 130. This name is applied to the ruins of an Ancient Chapel, situated on a prominent Knoll on the south east point of "Grimsay Island". "There is a tradition that St Michaels' Chapel was built by the same lady that built Trinity Church at Carinish, and that it was built for the use of strangers and fishermen coming to the port of Kallin." "Vide" Notices of Churches said to have been built in the Fourteenth Century" By F. W. L. Thomas capt. R. N. The north side and west end of this chapel stands about one storey high, which was probably its height when built, the other parts of it are nearly level to the ground. [A separate notation, which starts by almost exactly repeating the second sentence of the above reads as follows:] "There is a tradition that St Michael's Chapel was built by the same lady that built Trinity Church, Carinish, and that it was for the use of strangers and fishermen coming to the port of Kallin." (Martin (p 56. Western Islands) refers to this Chapel as the "Lowlanders Chappel", because seamen who die in the time of fishing are buried in that place". It will be seen that of the three churches ascribed to the Lady Annie, I am willing to suppose that she built St Michael's Chapel (before 1390), repaired and perhaps embellished Trinity Church, and rebuilt the side walls of the Church of St Columba, Benbecula.
