DUN TORCUILL | Dun Torcuill | Mr John Morrison A. A. Carmichael Esq |
031 | This name signifies "Torkill fort" and is applied to the remains of an ancient building situate on a small island in Loch an Duin. It is similar in construction to the Pictish Towers meet with in the county of Sutherland. The portion of this fort or tower remaining consists of a wall, circular in shape, 12 feet high, 90 feet in diameter and 10 feet thick. There appears to have been a passage running round the interior of the wall. That portion of the wall remaining is built of large stones without lime or mortar. The exterior of the fort is a mass of loose stones of considerable size, it can be approached by a foot way from the shore made of large falt [flat] stones, and apparently belongs to the same period as the fort. |
