OS1/17/36/27 Site of BATTLES OF INVERLOCHY A.D. 1431 and 1645 (Site of) Battles of Inverlochy (Site of) Battles of Inverlochy (Site of) Battles of Inverlochy Mr. Ewen Cameron, Lochyside Mr. Charles Cameron, Lochyside Mr. John McDonald, Fort William 150 Two battles are said to have been fought at Inverlochy, and so far as can be ascertained, on the same ground; a portion of land now known as "Lirsan," situated southwest of, and close to the old castle, - the one in 1431 between Donald Balloch of the Isles and the Earls of Caithness and Mar, and the other between the Marquis of Montrose and the Marquise of Argyle in 1645. So little traditionary is known of the first but few of the older inhabitants are aware it was ever fought. "The turbulent and disorderly state of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland occupied the attention of James the First, and, after concluding a truce with England in 1431, he turned his attention to these celebrated and remarkable districts. The Lords of the Isles were then in their glory, and maintained a dignity, importance, and independence, after rivalling that of the sovereign, and often opposed to his authority. One of these numerous battles between the Crown of Scotland and those fierce Island Chiefs occurred in 1431. Donald Balloch, a near relation of the then potent Lord of the Isles, enraged at what he considered the pusillanimity of the chief in submitting to the King's authority, collected an army in the Hebrides, and, disembarking in Lochaber, ravaged that district in the most relentless manner. To check his ferocity, and defend the western coast, Allan, Earl of Caithness, and Alexander, Earl of Mar, marched with a considerable force, and met the Island warrior at the ancient Castle of Inverlochy, near Fort William, in the county of Inverness. A bloody conflict ensued, in which the royal troops were completely defeated. Such was the fury of the attack, that superior discipline of the Lowlanders gave way before the battle-axes and broad swords of the men of the isles. The Earl of Caithness was slain, sixteen of his personal attendants, and many barons

The Earl of Mar escaped with the utmost difficulty, and was compelled to betake himself to the mountain fastness of the district, for safety and protection. Few particulars of this battle are recorded by the Scottish historians beyond the fact itself, and the results. Buchanan merely says of it that the Hebridean leader "having been informed that his opponents were struggling disorderly, and without encamping regularly, or setting watches, silently landed his men during the night, and attacked them unexpectedly, and made a great slaughter." The extract of the battle, as a whole, is taken from Pinkerton's History of Scotland; Buchanan's History; Tytler's History; and Words Edition of Douglas Peerage. In the second battle fought here the Campbells under the Marquis of Argyle were completely routed, and a pool at the southwest end of the island is still called Poll nan Guin[bhoreich] (Pool of the Campbells) where several of them were drowned. "The plain extending from the river (Lochy) to the base of the mountain was the scene of sanguinary conflict between the Marquis of Montrose and the Marquis of Argyle, in the year 1645." "The country of Argyle had some time previously been ravaged by Montrose's army. Argyle applied to the Convention of Estates at Edinburgh for a military force to chastise the invader of the ancient territory of Maccallummore. His suit was granted; and a considerable force was raised under General Baillie and Sir John Urrie; whilst Argyle established his headquarters at Dumbarton, whither his clansmen and dependents, burning to revenge the wrongs and cruelties inflicted on them by the Jacobite army, flocked at the summons of their chief. Montrose was marching towards Inverness, when he received tidings of the contemplated movement against him. "Argyle took possession of Inverlochy Castle as his headquarters and his army encamped around him, on the plain between that and Loch Eil. In their progress southward to Inverlochy, the army of Montrose was reinforced by the Chiefs of Glengarry, Keppoch and Locheil. The conflict between the two armies took place on the 2nd of February 1645. The Campbells were taken by surprise when they found themselves in the presence of their ever-active enemy. Montrose, as has been previously mentioned, rushed down upon the plain with his resistless Highlanders, through the defile between Ben Nevis and the hill of Unichan. Argyle having had one of his arms disabled by a recent fall, was induced by the advice of his officers - himself, seemingly, nothing loth, - to betake himself to his galley on the loch before the fight commenced. In the fray Highlanders were opposed to Highlanders, and both armies fought with desparation, but victory speedily declared for Montrose. The Campbells, after a gallant resistance, retreated in disorder, and while hundreds fell beneath the claymore, several hundreds were driven into the loch and were drowned. Of the remnant of the army, many were pursued and slain as they fled towards the head of Loch Leven. Fifteen hundred of Argyle's forces perished in the slaughter, or were drowned, including five hundred "dunniwassels," or gentlemen claiming connection with the house of rank and quality. It is situated on the margin of the stream near the point where it is crossed by the suspension bridge." "Its antiquity is not so high as that which is usually claimed for it, nor is there any evidence to prove that it ever was a royal fortress. The castle consists of four large round towers, thirty feet high, connected by a screen some eight or ten feet lower, forming together an extensive quadrangle. The western and southern towers are in a tolerable state of preservation. The former, named Cuming's [last word scored through] Cumyns Tower, is larger than the other three, and its walls are about ten feet in thickness. OS1/17/36/38 FORT WILLIAM (Dismantled) 150 Fortwilliam a fortress on the east side of Loch Linnhe, overhung by Ben Nevis, near the south west end of the great glen of Invernessshire. It stands contiguous to the town of Maryburgh which see -. It was originally built by General Monk, during the time of Cromwell, took from an ancient castle in the vicinity the name of the garrison of Inverlochy: and had accommodation for about 2.000 men. But the Original structure was chiefly earth built, and altogether of a temporary character. The present fort was built on a small scale with stone and lime in the reign of William III and took its name from that monarch. It is an irregular work, of a triangular shape with two bastions mounting 15 twelve pounders; and is defended by a ditch, glacis and [?]. It contains a bombproof magazine, and accommodation for 2 field officers, 2 Captains, 4 Subalterns and 96 Privates.
