CASTLE (Ruin) [Inverness] Castle (Ruin) 012 The County Buildings occupy the site of an old castle, said to have been in existence as early as the twelfth century; was with some modern Barracks, used as a Royal Fort, and was destroyed by the rebels in 1745. The only vestige of this ancient edifice now remaining is a piece of the foundation appearing a little above the pavement in the Castle Wynd immediately underneath the Prison Wall.

012 This name is applied to a spacious and very substantial building standing on an eminence called Castle Hill, directly south of and overlooking the town. It was erected in 1835 by the Northern Counties. The building comprises the Court room, Sheriff's room, and the Procurator Fiscal's room, the Fiscal Office, Jury Room, and the Conveyancing Room. The County Police Office & Keeper's room, the Witnesses Waiting room and a few toerh rooms of minor importance.
