This name was given
to me wrong on making further enquires
about it I find it is Caochan

the Loads. The hills here are
very wild, and a person
may walk them for a Month
without even meeting with
a Shepherd _ So it is very difficult
to get the correct names. |

As J is not a Gaelic letter
would it not be better use the
letter I instead _ See List of names
in Armstrong's Dictionary
The word is always pronounced
Iain not Jain
[Pencil note pointing to the name "ALLT AN LOCHAN IAIN" in the List of Names column]
here is a noun in the gen. [genitive] sing. [singular]
which is contrary to the usage better followed on the Survey
It would be better to write the name as given by the authorities
that is Allt Lochan Iain
[Pencil note pointing to the letter "I" in th name "LOCHAN IAIN" in the List of Names column]
I not J In Macleod & Dewar's Dictionary the name is spelled Jain but this incorrect
The J is evidently a misprint in

114 |
A very large prominent Creag, rising on the south side of the Spey directly opposite creag Mhor; on the south side of which is a deep precipitous defile running to the distance of about half a mile from West to east, through which a small stream flows. On the north side of this stream and about half way down the declivity is a small cave formed by three large rocks, two upright and one forming the roof, the entrance to the cave is very narrow and well adapted for concealment. A tradition is told by the natives of this district of a certain irish gentleman name Cathelus who eloped with a daughter of Cluny McPherson's and hid in this cave. He was discovered, fled, captured, and was murdered about a mile from the creag on the north side of the Spey. There is a Standing-Stone over his grave. This occurred about 200 years ago. -
Hence the name. |

STANDING STONE [Allt-a'-chaoruinn] |
Standing Stone |
John McLaren Shepherd Meallgarbha

099 |
The tradition told by the natives in connection with this standing stone is to this effect.
_A certain irish gentleman name Cathelus thought proper to make love to a daughter of on of the old McPhersons of Cluny. Cluny did not approve of it and gave his clan to understand that he did not. The lovers eloped and sought a temporary Asylum in a cave in Craig a Cathelus which takes its name from him. The ground was covered with snow at the time, and their foot-prints led to their discovery by the clan. The lovers heard of their approach and fled, but were overtaken at the place where the standing stone now stands. Here they murdered Cathelus by cutting his heard out, & they buried him beneath the stone. The stone appears to have been about 6 feet high when first erected, but it has been broken in halves the piece standing is about 3 feet in height, ( the fragment lies close beside the standing portion). I cannot trace any initials or other characters upon it. This occured about 200 Years ago. |

A large deep basin shaped corrie lying at the south side of the Corrieyairack Hill, on the north side of which numerious springs arise form which several small streams flow, the most important being Allt Ruadh or the Red Stream which takes its name from the deep red scars through which it flows. SPEY SIDE GUIDE -- Corrie Yairack (continued) -- rocky nose, the origin of this name, is taken from the roaring of the Deer during the rutting season. The Corrieyarick (OLD MILITARY) road may be seen rising on the acclivity of the hill. "The road is carried over it by (12) twelve traverses, like the course of a ship when beating to windward; and when the traveller has ascended a considerable distance, he may see another traveller who is really following him, walking in an opposite direction. "Thus that steep ascent, which was so difficult to be attained even by foot-passengers is rendered everywhere more easy for wheel-carriages than Highgate Hill" Skirne, who crossed this mountain, by what he justly called the highest pass in Britain, on a stormy day, has dilated upon its difficulties and desolation. He asserts that the wildest and most dreary solitude of Siberia cannot display a sean more desolate." On a fine day a person may command a very extensive view from the hill top, where the traveller may also refresh himself from the General's Well," called after General Wade who was the maker of the road. "The Military Roads the necessity for which was seen by the Government in 1715 was begun in the Year 1726 and were eleven Years in formation", Prince Charles passed over here in August 1745 when he raised the Standard of Rebellion The road at present is unfit for vehicles of any kind

115 |
The ruins of the Old Catholic Church at the head of Loch Laggan one gable is still entire and a considerable portion of the wall is as yet in a tollerable state of preservation this Church was dedicated to St Kenneth and is according to tradition one of the seven Churches built by the famous freebooter "Allan Cameron" of the family of Locheil called by the highlanders "Allain nan Creach." It was never used as a place of Protestant worship. It is a well known fact that the builder of this Church was a great freebooter, but having become penitent his father confessor imposed upon him as a penance to build seven Churches, and is one of the seven |

THE DÙN (Remains of) |
The Dun |
Revd. [Reverend] Alexander Campbell
Ewen Campbell

115 |
This was evidently a place of refuge from the nature of the Wall by which it was fortified, for where-ever it was assailable the Wall was stronger and much thicker and where-ever the rock formed naturally a stronger barrier the Wall in proportion is less attended to in regard to either to thickness or strength. It is also a place where a mere handful of men could defend it against a large number that the Inhabitants of the County stood as Siege there at different times is evident from the quantity of Cow's, or Oxen bones that have been dug out of one of its corners: Moreover human bones have been discovered there. it could never have been a place where people had lived for any time, for the height, and coldness of the Climate forbids the idea to be entertained. There is no tradition regarding it. It is no ways like the other Duns you allude to as found in other parts of Scotland; this one I think stands singularly by itself; for it is a high conical hill with a flat top surrounded by a wall, twelve feet thick in some parts. It is likely that it was built anterior to the use of lime or morter, for there was not lime used in the construction of the Wall. The outsides of this Wall were built of beautiful thin Flags, and the intervening space filled up by stones of various shape and form, but not of large size. |

"A district of Inverness-shire. It extends along the south west side of Loch Ness, but is for the most part separated from that lake by a narrow range of hills. It forms an upper table-land cut across by the rivers Foyers & Farigag, The Strath is comparatively broad and open and expands do the north into a wide and elevated plain, occasionally tunnulated with hills. It is variously in meadow, arable, & moorland, and it has a cincture of granite heights which shoot aloft in numerous naked summits." Fullartons Gazetter It is bounded on the south by the Monadhliath Mountains which separate it from the Laggan parish and Badenoch district. |
