"The valley of Strath Nairn which forms more than nine-tenths of the united parishes of Daviot and Dunlichity, it is in figure, nearly, though not quite triangular and extends from Wester Abercalder the property of Charles Mackintosh of Aberarder, at its south western extremity, in a north western direction, winding considerably towards the middle, the chain of precipitious and rugged Cliffs which constitute a wall on its north side, separating it from the parish of Dores; there, suddenly breaking off, thence rapidly inclining to the bride of Daviot on the Highland Road where the Strath may be said to terminate in a very steep and narrow glen". Vide New Statistical Account.
Not more than about one sixth of the Strath is cultivated, the remainder being heather and plantations. The River Nairn runs through it. It is in the hands of serveral proprietors. |
