OS1/17/10/66A Roshven, Fortwilliam 13 Oct 1880 There is a considerable Hill (2576 ft.) on my property here in Lat 56 [degrees] 50 [minutes] N: Long. 5[degrees] 41 [minutes] 30 [seconds] W approximately) the name of which the natives pronounce Roshven. In the best old county map (Thomson's I believe, published by Keith Johnston) it is marked Roshvein and it is so spelt in the titles to my property. In the Admiralty Chart (2496) it is spelt Rosbheinn. I always spell it myself Roshven to prevent 99 percent of Her Majesty's subjects calling it Roshvain; but I have no serious objection to any of the above mentioned spellings. I [illegible, ? pentuce] However to think that the nomenclature Am Fros-bheinn which I find in the Six Inch Ordnance Map (Sheet 135, I think) is really too eccentric. I have reason to suppose that this was taken from the etymological theory of a former, not very literary, minister at Arisaig, who fancied he knew Gaelic (I beg pardon, I suppose the Ordnance office will only recognise it as Gaidhealig). My object in writing is to [express?] a hope that in the Ordnance Map in the one inch scale, which is not yet published, the name of my hill will appear in some rational spelling. I am Your obt. OS1/17/10/66C 10 November 80 [1880] Sir M.General Bayley has forwarded to me your note of 13th Ultimo on the subject of the spelling of a hill on your property. I beg to inform you that your remarks will be considered. . I am Sir Your obedient Servant, G. C. Cooke Colonel R.E. Director General Ordnance Survey H. Blackburn Esq.
OS1/17/10/66D 66d Kinlochmoidart 2 Dec. 1880 Fort William Capt. Purcell R.E. Sir I have made enquiry before replying to yours of the 25th Ult. [ultimo, last month]. We cannot make out why "Am" is placed before the name of the hill you refer to. I believed it is correctly spelt in Gaelic as Fros bhein and think in a Gaelic country that would be adhered to. Pronounced by English speakers it is spoken of as "Roshven" there
OS1/17/10/66E is a peculiarity in pronouncing the name in Garlic which comes nearly to Roshven and may be used by those natives who have much intercourse with English speakers but among themselves the natives adhere to their own pronounciation. The Surveyors asked me to whom they should trust for names & I recommended them to ask my shepherd who had long resided in the district but has since left it. In Gaelic there is no V. bh stands for it Personally I wish Gaelic names to be retained Yours faithfully Mr. Robertson Macdonald Translated it is the Mill "of Showers" - "Fros" stands for Showers- There is no meaning in Roshven except corruption
OS1/17/10/66F 66f O.SO. Ipswich 25th. Novr. [November] 1880 Captain M H Purcell R.E. Sir With regard to the spelling of the hill "Am Fros-bheinn" questioned by Mr H Blackburn, I beg to state that Mr Robertson Esqr. Kinlochmoidart House , by Fort William, Inverness-shire, N. B. [North Britain, i.e. Scotland]is part owner of this Hill, (and as far as I remember of the principal part) Mr H Blackburn owns the North face and has a residence at the foot of this hill, which he calls Roshven. Mr. Robertson is my principal authority for this name, which he wishes to be written in its Gaelic form and not Roshven [underlined] which is the Anglicized form, the meaning given for this hill is "Hill of the Showers" which interpreted in Gaelic is "Am Fros-bheinn", as
OS1/17/10/66G 66g written on Ordnance Plan The Revd. [reverend] Wm. OS1/17/10/66H 66h Ordnance Survey Office Tower Street Ipswich 6th. December 1880 Director A letter from Mr. Blackburn, on the subject of the spelling of a hill in Inverness-shire, called on the 6 inch Ordnance Map "Am Fros-bheinn" has been forwarded to me, as the examination of the part of Scotland in which the hill is situated, was done by this Division. I wrote to Mr Robertson Macdonald who owns a portion of this hill to ascertain from him what he considered to be the correct mode of spelling this name, his letter is forwarded herewith: from his letter it appears to be quite clear that Mr Blackburn is quite wrong, in Gaelic there is apparently no v, bh stands for it. Mr Robertson Macdonald takes exception to the 'Am', but this is merely the definite article, it might however be omitted as it appears to be the [Notes written to the left of the letter] "Fros-bheinn" to be adopted as the spelling, the "Am" to be omitted. The 6 inch plate to be altered accordingly G C Cooke C R E 8.12.80 Director Is Mr. Blackburn to be answered accordingly? GnS Yes, - that it appears that the present spellings are corruption of "Am Fros-bheinn", But that the "Am" will be omitted as not essential which will assimilate the name phonetically to that which is now used G. C. C.
OS1/17/10/66I 66I custom of the natives of the locality to omit the 'Am' when speaking of the hill. I have consulted Mr. Evan Murray the clerk of this Division, a Gaelic Scholar, he says "Am Fros-bheinn" is perfectly correct, grammatically, the "Am" may however be omittedif desired. I forward also a statement from Mr N. Bartlett on the subject of this name, he examined this hill & collected the names - Mr McIntosh was consulted as to the spelling of this name. M.H. Purcell Capt. R.E. G.O. This correction has been carried out on the copper plates. The impressions in store have been demanded and will be corrected by hand. Alten Beamish Captain R.E. 6.1.81 L.Col.Carey & Capt. Beamish Will you kindly note the Director's decision on the other side, & have the plan & plates altered accordingly. By order E. J. Hussey R.E. 16.12.80 Captain Beamish. The correction has been made on Sheet 148, Inverness, and on one inch at [revising] 61D of Scotland. will you please have the correction carried out on the Copper Plates. - It will also be necessary to make the alteration showing on the S. margin of Sheet 149, 6 inch scale. C.P, Carey Lieut. Colonel R.E. 15.12.80 L.Col. Carey Will you be good enough to place these papers in the Name Book of the part referred to. By order E.J..Hussey Capt. R.E. 20.9.81
OS1/17/10/66J 66j K 276 11th December Sir, In further reference to your letter of 13th October, I am desired by Colonel Cooke to inform you that from enquiries which have been made, he has decided to adopt Fros bheinn, on the Ordnance plans, as the name of the hill about which you wrote. The mode in which you say the name is now generally spelt appears to be a corruption of that given above, but the omission on the plan of "Am", as not essential, will tend to assimilate the name phonetically to that which is now used. I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant, A. M. Scott L.Col H. Blackburn Esqre. [esquire]
