001 | This village is situated at the sea side of the Moray Firth, and on the military road leading from Perth to Fort George, 1½ miles from the latter place It is chiefly composed of houses of one storey high, most of which are thatched and the greater part of which are only kept in middling state of repair It is entirely on the property of Lord Cawdor, and consists of one irregularly built street called High Street, which is nearly a half mile in length There is only one yearly market, held on the 12th of August, at which the only business done is the hiring of servants for the harvest. There are two schools in this village,-the parish and the Free, and twp churches, the Free, and the U.P. It has not weekly market, It is ten miles from Inverness and 7 from the town of Nairn. |
