O.S.O. [Ordnance Survey Office] Perth
6th. Augt. [August] 1859
The Index Book for the parish of St.
Vigeans has not been made out owing to a
large proportion of the parish, and con-
sequently, of the object names, coming within
the range of the 10 feet scale. Town
of Arbroath, and as the latter plans are
not yet written nor the name Books, quite
complete, the Index Book could not at
present, be conveniently made out, that is
if it be necessary to include all the names
in the parish in said book, And as such
could be much more easily done when
the 25 Inch plan of the parish be completed
by the reduction of the 10 ft. [feet] scale, it is pre-
sumed that such is the system, practised
in similar cases at the office Southampton,
but if it be otherwise, by transmitting in-
structions to this office whatever it may be
shall be strictly followed. |

[Situation] In the SE. [South East] end of Forfarshire.
An important parish consisting of a large main body and two small detached portions; on the coast of Forfarshire. The main body is bounded on the north and on the east by Inverkeillor; on the S.E. [South East] by the German Ocean for 5 miles and on the west by Arbroath, Arbirlot and Carmyllie. Its greatest length from east to west is about 8 miles and its breadth varies from about 1¾ to 4½. One of the detached portions lies half a mile south of the main body is separated from it by the burgh road of Arbroath; measures about 6 furlongs inwards from the beach and 4 furlongs in breadth and owing to its having been the place where the hospital for the sick of Arbroath Abbey stood bears the name of Hospitalfield. The other detached portion is the estate of Inverpeffer lies 3 miles south of the main body is bounded on east by sea; on the south

by Panbride and on the other sides by Arbirlot measures about 1½ miles by 7 furlongs and anciently belonged to the Fletchers afterwards of Salton but was purchased in 17th. century by the family of Panmure. The town and abbey of Arbroath belonged to the parish till about the year 1560.
The main body is divided south-south-eastward into nearly equal parts by the rivulet Brothock. The coast for 3½ miles in extent is flat with a sandy beach for about a mile from Arbroath and thence it rises abruptly becomes bold and rocky and has a mean height of about 100 feet. The interior rises very slowly to Dickmountlaw, slopes gently thence to the Brothock and then rises with scarcely perceptible gradient towards inconsiderable heights on the western boundary. The general surface may be regarded as proximately level with a few gentle elevations. The soil is various but on the whole fertile. The parish includes a part of the town of Arbroath which had been some years ago erected into a Quoad Sacra parish. The rocky part of the coast is deeply perforated by several remarkable caves.
The parish is in the presbytery of Arbroath and Synod of Angus and Mearns. Patron the Crown.
There are no other detached portions of this parish but those already mentioned and there are no detached portion of any parish within that of St. Vigeans. |

[Situation] At the N.W. [North West] side of the parish.
It is supposed that this burn derived its name from a Danish Camp having been situated on its banks. Its principal source is in a spring well situated at the side of the burn on Haughstane Farm in the Parish of Inverkeilor. It flows in a westerly direction, and joins Colliston Burn on Colliston Farm. |

[Situation] In the west end of the parish
This Cave was discovered in a field on the farm of West Grange of Connan during the process of ploughing last spring, and is consi- [considered] by all competent judges who saw it to have been an ancient subterraneous dwelling and of of the same description of artificial usually called Picts Houses. The following extract from the Telegraph of June 4th. 1859 a Dundee News paper will convey an idea of what it is.
" Archaeological Discovery. A discovery of intense interest to antiquarians has just been made on the farm of West Grange of Connan (Mr. Lindsays) on the estate of that name belonging to Dr. [Doctor] Crichton of Dundee. In the centre of a nearly sown field of barley on a rising ground of about 550 feet above the level of the sea we came on a small opening of a triangular form which with difficulty admitted us when we found ourselves in the centre of one of those ancient bee-hived formed places generally ascribed to Pictish origin of which we have no cause to doubt. The place is built without cement of any kind of unhewn and split boulders with blocks of old red sandstone. + + + + + + + +

"It is about 9 feet in width and the building gradually forms itself into a dangerous looking Cupola of extremely rude workmanship but which has stood the test of unknown ages. Not having as yet been properly excavated we could not ascertain its depth but by comparison, we should not think it more than 12 or 15 feet. An opening on its western side of about 2 feet 9 inches in breadth allows the earnest explorer to crawl on all fours for about 6 feet, in all of which we found the same rude workmanship continued but how far it may run has yet to be discovered

The Scottish Chronicles relate that hereabout once stood a building named Cairngairy Castle belonging to a chieftain of the name of Gregory but the subterraneous building we speak of had been erected long before the age of Castle building" ++++ |

[Situation] East side of Grange of Conon
These vestiges are said to be the remains of the original St Vigean's Chapel, which was used as a place of worship, previous to the erection of the one which is now the Parish Church. Mr Brown an Antiquary in Arbroath states that this Chapel must have been built between the ninth and tenth Century. About the year 1790 human bones were found within the inclosure where the remains of the chapel are situated. |

St. Vigean's Chapel [note]
St Vigean was a monk and famed preacher in the "
end of the tenth century. His original Chapel and hermitage
were at Grange of Conan where there are a small grove
and foundations of a Chapel, and also a most copious
fountain, which preserves his name. Three or four acres
of land contiguous to these are by tradition held as belonging
to the Chapel. Not far from this place, there was a baronial
Castle named + Gory or Gregory which perhaps afforded
protection to him; and a + Druidical Circle, on another
eminence not very distant, laid a foundation for the rude
population conveniently assembling and being converted to a new faith by former local association"
New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Forfarshire. pp. [pages] 489, 490
+ Enquiry has been concerning "Castle Gregory" and also concerning the "Druidical Circle" mentioned
above, among the persons consulted were the Revd. [Reverend] Mr Muir ph. [parish] minister Mr. Bremnar of Arbroath, & Mr
Miller, Writer, of the latter place, but they all express their opinion that the site of either of these
objects has not been known to any one of the present generation although it is traditionally stated that Colliston
House was built of the stones found in the ruins of Castle Gregory. |

[Notes]
It appears this was a holy well in former times. Mr. Bremnar and
others say that it is still considered efficacious for the cure of
Colic and other distempers and is much resorted for this
purpose at the present time although not as in former
times through a belief in its supernatural virtue
"The place is supposed to have derived its name from Vigianus
who according to Boathius was a monk and famed preacher sometime
about the end of the tenth Century and who was sainted for his
many virtues. Tradition says he was a Culdee teacher but
gained over to the Romish faith; and that his original Chapel
and hermitage were at Grange of Conon a place about
three miles distant where there is a small grove and foundation
of a Chapel; and also a copious spring which still preserves his name."

[Situation] Adjoining the SE. [South East] corner of the parish church
This is one of the ancient sculptured stones which hitherto puzzled antiquaries as to the meaning of the devices sculptured upon. This stone which is now set up at an angle of the parish church was formerly sunk in the earth up to its top and was opposite to the middle or central part of the church a few feet from its south side, but was removed and placed where it now stands at the expence of Mr. Chalmers of Auldbar at the time he was preparing the manuscript of his book on the sculptured stones of Forfarshire. Tradition says it was erected to the memory of St. Vigeans, but antiquaries give no credit to this, unlike most of the other stones of this class this one is remarkable for figures of men in the costume of monks or other Churchmen but the cross as usual is figured with interlaced Knot work, and has figures on the reverse side of different kinds of animals and has the usual Z shaped figure or symbol. The arms of the cross which originally was but short is very much much mutilated. In Chalmers work above referred to there is engraved a facsimile of the stone as it now stands with its sculpture.
The figure of the cross side of the stone is somewhat thus [drawing inserted] having each side of the interlaced work of the cross many sculptured figures |

[Situation] In the SE [South East] side of the Grave Yard which surrounds the parish ch. [church].
This is one of the most remarkable of Sculptured Stones in Scotland of this class, as it is the only one of the kind now extant that has an inscription on it, but the upper part of the stone is entirely broken off consequently the upper part of the cross is gone, but it evidently had some short arms of a cross on it as the stalk of the cross, is sculptured on the one side of the stone with interlaced Knot work in basso relievo On the other side are several figures of men and beasts, with some nondescript animals, but among the figures there is prominently a man with a cross bow taking aim at a wild boar. But what has attracted most attention to this stone is its inscription, it is at the bottom of its left ledge from the entrance at the gateway. Considering its age it appears very plain and the letters distinctly cut. The letters are sunk not in basso-relievo as stated in some accounts and appears entire as it was originally, none of the letters have been obliterated as stated in Wilson's Archaeology and is written in the Celtic character. Mr. Chalmers states that the inscription was submitted to Dr. [Doctor] Petrie but he could not decipher it, although it

appears in the character and language as some of the inscriptions on stones at Iona and some others that have been satisfactorily deciphered. The lettering or inscription stands thus as near as I could hastily sketch them roughly [Sketch of inscription within box inserted here] This inscription serves in a great measure to remove much of the doubt and obscurity that for a long time past involved this class of Sculptured Stones. The inscription properly divided into words appears to me to be this AROITEN IRE UORET ETT FORCUR Here it appears is a mixture of Gaelic and Latin, very likely written by some of the monks of the time who had a knowledge of both Languages. The Latin "ett" being used instead of the Gaelic "is" or "agus". The first word of the Inscription viz. AROITEN, would read in modern Gaelic Oraidean i,e, Prayers, but on the letters of this word it is to be remarked that in ancient Gaelic or Irish MSS. [Manuscripts] the letters A, and O, are indiscriminately used for each other, The same remark applies to the letters D, &, T, It therefore plainly appears to be an humble request to pray, or for prayers , for two persons probably man and wife. The name UORET, I take to be the name Mary in the Gaelic "Moire" but with the initial consonant aspirated, would be pronounced nearly like Voreh as it would be in reading the inscription. Therefore the inscription in plain English is, "Prayers for Mary and Forcur" The latter is very likely the name Fearchur or Fearchard which appears to have been a popular name of men in the 6th. 7th. and subsequent centuries in Scotland. It is also possible that some of the sculptured figures on this and other stones of the same class may be emblematic of the bond of marriage, &c. |

Maiden Castle [note]
"Before descending to the Shore let us take a glance at that half-moon formed
Bastion or green mound on our left not that we will be able to throw
any light on its origin for of that now no known records tell but having a reverence
for the antique we may adduce inferences from what may yet be seen. That the
mound has been artificially formed appears evident on investigation, and that it has been a place of strength
the fosse yet distinctly traceable would indicate but whether to attribute it to the Caledonian, the Roman or the
Dane might afford matter for searching enquiry. Its position may have been deemed impregnable and its name of The
Maiden Castle which has been handed down through ages would further confirm that it had been a strong hold but
the limited extent of its quadrangle is testimony that its garrison had never been extensive. It is a good remnant
of fortification and a striking memorial of the Olden tyme"

St. Ninian's Well [note]
"Having now arrived at the foot of the Cliffs on our left we observe a small spring of excellent water issuing from
the side of the rock this is called St. Ninian's or more commonly St. Ringan's Well near which tradition says a
small Chapel stood dedicated to that Saint and served in Sacra by a monk from the Abbey of Aberbrothock
but no vestiges of a chapel now remain. Although the well is not in itself particularly attractive for it is
only a hollow scooped out of the rock yet being in the vicinity of scenery of the most grand and romantic kind
and associated with a legend of the most heart-stirring interest, rendered more attractive by the poetic
witchery which has been thrown over it by the late Alexander Balfour a native poet of considerable merit
who in his tradition tale of Mary Scott of Eden-Knowe has gained for the spot an imperishable
fame. It is much resorted to by the Arbroath pedestrians who in their walks make it as it were a
shrine of pilgrimage."

This is pointed out as the Site of the Old Chapel which was dedicated to St. Ninian; It stood on the rising ground at the Commencement of the Cliffs and East from the Town of Arbroath on what is now Called the Farm of West Seaton. Mr. Miller states that "The Chapel of St. Ninian was dependent on the Abbey. The Abbot regularly granted presentations to the Chaplainry. The Chapel and Altar were Consacrated on the 24th. of August 1485, but Seem to have existed long previously. Religious Services were performed in the Chapel till near the Reformation. The Surrounding field Known as St. Ninian's Croft formed part of its endowments; it must, however, have possessed other rents or Tithes besides this Croft"

[St. Ninian's Chapel, continued] |
|
|
[continued from page 129]
There was a chapel dedicated to St. Ninian situated about 2 miles from the church on the sea side near the place where the Coast begins to rise between Arbroath and Auchmithy. No vestige of the chapel now appears, but a part of the burying ground remains through the middle of which a road has been lately cut and the ends of several coffins of stone are visible. St. Ninian's Well near the Church-yard was in former times of great repute for the cure of several diseases but now totally neglected.
