046 | [Situation] In the SE [South East] side of the Grave Yard which surrounds the parish ch. [church]. This is one of the most remarkable of Sculptured Stones in Scotland of this class, as it is the only one of the kind now extant that has an inscription on it, but the upper part of the stone is entirely broken off consequently the upper part of the cross is gone, but it evidently had some short arms of a cross on it as the stalk of the cross, is sculptured on the one side of the stone with interlaced Knot work in basso relievo On the other side are several figures of men and beasts, with some nondescript animals, but among the figures there is prominently a man with a cross bow taking aim at a wild boar. But what has attracted most attention to this stone is its inscription, it is at the bottom of its left ledge from the entrance at the gateway. Considering its age it appears very plain and the letters distinctly cut. The letters are sunk not in basso-relievo as stated in some accounts and appears entire as it was originally, none of the letters have been obliterated as stated in Wilson's Archaeology and is written in the Celtic character. Mr. Chalmers states that the inscription was submitted to Dr. [Doctor] Petrie but he could not decipher it, although it [continued on page 94] |
