040; 041; 045; 046; 047 | [Situation] In the SE. [South East] end of Forfarshire. An important parish consisting of a large main body and two small detached portions; on the coast of Forfarshire. The main body is bounded on the north and on the east by Inverkeillor; on the S.E. [South East] by the German Ocean for 5 miles and on the west by Arbroath, Arbirlot and Carmyllie. Its greatest length from east to west is about 8 miles and its breadth varies from about 1¾ to 4½. One of the detached portions lies half a mile south of the main body is separated from it by the burgh road of Arbroath; measures about 6 furlongs inwards from the beach and 4 furlongs in breadth and owing to its having been the place where the hospital for the sick of Arbroath Abbey stood bears the name of Hospitalfield.
