A small parish on the western boundary of Forfarshire situated at the head of the deep indentation which the county suffers from Perthshire. It is bounded on the north by Perthshire and Airly; on the East & South-east by Airly; and in other directions by Perthshire. Its surface is a gentle southerly slope, near the foot of the Grampians, and on the north side of Strathmore; and is partly bounded and bisected by the River Isla"

"On the south & south west side of the parish there is an enclosure of great antiquity, concerning the use of which tradition gives no account. It is nearly of a square form & contains about an English Acre of ground. The walls which are of earth, as far as can be judged, have been originally of considerable height and breadth. A deep and wide ditch on the outside of the wall, filled with water from an adjoining morass is still almost entire. This Fort, now known by the name of Castledykes, was probably a place of retreat to the neighborhood in times of turbulence & barbarism."

A small but neat edifice recently erected upon the same site of the former church. "It is commonly said that the parish of Ruthven originally formed a portion of Alyth, and was erected into a separate cure by the Earl Crawford for the accommodation of his vassals. So far, however, from being the fact, there was a Kirk at Ruthven at least a century and a half before the Lindsays had anything to do with the district; for so early as the year 1180 Robert de Lundres, natural son to William the Lion, gave the patronage and tythes of the church of Ruthven to the Monastery of Arbroath. All subsequent history of the church is lost" Jarvies, Land of the Lindsays |

A short distance to the east [of the Cairn] are two large unshapely granite stones standing upright which the Rev. [Reverend] Mr. Bartney also attributes them to the more ancient inhabitants, but not Druidical circles.
"In the E. [East] moor of Ruthven Parish are 2 large granite stones, a species of stone rather uncommon in this neighbourhood standing erect, between 5 or 6 feet above ground, at the distance of 12 feet from each other. The [largest] granite is on the west side, and 20 feet in circumference. These stones might be considered as some Druidical monument, the more so as the farm adjoining is called Draffan, which according to some is a corruption of Druidum Fanum, that is a temple or place of worship of the Druids"

"A conical mount in this parish called Saddle Hillock is said to have been made use of by the English, perhaps to command the ford at Dellavaird. The Hillock stands upon a very level field, is of considerable height, and has upon its top the remains of a small earthen fort, evidently artificial & appears from an opening made in its side to have been composed of large stones, some of which are smoothed as if they had been taken from the river. Whether it was erected on this occasion or whether it might not have been much more ancient, it is not easy to determine." Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |
