028; 035 | "The ancient name of Montrose seems to have been Celurca, Many derivations have been assigned for its modern appellation. The most probable is from the Gaelic Moinross signifies "the fenny promontory" & it is called by the vulgar, Monross to this day. Buchanan & others have given it a derivation more flattering than just, when they assert, that it properly means the Mount of Roses (Mons Rosarium) Yet in allusion to this fanciful derivation, the seal of the town is impressed with roses; and the motto is "Mare ditat, rosa "decorat", (the sea enriches, & the rose adorns.)"
