[Statistical Account] 051 "The Castle of Auchinleck (or the field of stones), commonly called Affleck, is situated upon the high grounds of the parish of Monikie, and somewhat more than a mile west of the Church. It consists of a large tower, of considerable elevation, and of excellent masonry; but from its arrangement and style, had never been intended for a place of strength. It is still entire, and is used for lumber-rooms &c. At what time, and by whom it was erected, there is apparently no record. In the reign of James I, the estate was the property of a family designed for it "of that Ilk"; and, about the year 1430, Sir John Auchinleck, Knight, at that time the proprietor, married a daughter of Sir John Boswell of Balmuto, in Fife Shire, who, after Sir John's death. married Durham of Grange of Monifieth. The year 1830 [1430], however, is too old a date for the erection of the Castle, which may probably have been built by some of the Auchinlecks before the Estate was [continued on page 42]

Before, and at that time it was, along with a considerable extent of territory, the property of a family of the name of Reid which was attainted for being engaged in the rebellion of that period, when the property was forfeited and sold to various purchasers. The writer was informed by a very aged person, whose grandmother in her youth was waiting-maid to Mrs Reid, that, on espying the officers of law approaching to take possession of the Castle, they secreted plate of considerable value about their persons, and, unmolested by the officers, proceeded to Dundee. Mr Reid had escaped to France, where his lady and family succeeded in joining him. Thomas Reid of Auchinleck, presented a siver communion cup to the Kirk Session of Dundee - [continued on page 43]

After the forfeiture of Mr Reid, the Castle, with a large part of the estates, were purchased by James Yeaman, one of the bailies of Dundee, and not long ago Mr Graham of Kincaldrum purchased them from the representatives of Mr Yeaman's descendant. The bailie probably resided in the Castle during part of the year; but, after the erection of the present Mansion house, by one of his successors, the Castle as a residence was abandoned. Part of the barony of Auchinleck was sold about the beginning of last century.
