"If Men or Mun in the Celtic, as has been said, means a moss or bog, then Menmore will signify the great Moss, which etymology receives considerable credit from the face of the parish to the south, and the remains of marshy grounds in that quarter.
The name was anciently Menmure and Menmore the last syllable of which is well known to be a common termination to names of places in this Kingdom, such as Strathmore, the great valley, Kenmore the great head and Beumore the great hill"
Old Statistical Account.
The parish is bounded on the north by the parish of Lethnot & Navar; on the north-west by a small portion of commonty land; on the West by the parish of Fearn; on the south by the parishes of Careston and Brechin and on the East by the parish of Stracathro.
The villages in the parish are the Kirkton of Menmuir, which comprises the parish Church, School, Manse & Schoolmasters house, and Figerton an

Nearly all of the works of this Fort are still entire, The Inner rampart is nearly level with the ground but is quite traceable, It contains four gates, The next rampart rises about 4 feet above the ground and contains 9 gates, About 20 yards from it a broad ditch runs parallel with it, which on the West side is barely traceable, The next rampart is in good preservation and contains 9 gates, The outer rampart has also 9 gates and is surrounded by a narrow ditch, - "The situation of the Brown Caterthun is not so high as that just now described" (the White Caterthun) and its figure approaches much nearer to a circle, It is fortified with several slight earthen intrenchments whereof the central one appears to have served as a praetorium, The next to it is the strongest and contains no fewer than 7 gates, Those without it have likewise several openings for the sortee of the garrison"
General Roy's work on antiquities
"The name is plainly from the British word Cader, a fortress, a stronghold, and Dun, a hill. Several of the fortified hills in Wales bear the same prefix Cader; as Cader Dinmael, Cader Idris, and others. Cader Dun would be made Cader-dhun by the Scoto-Irish, Cader-thun by the Scoto-Saxons, and Forthill by the English." Chalmers Caledonia |

The portion of the outer intrenchment which lies within the plantation, is composed of a double rampart still plain to be seen, outside of the wood on the Northwest it is for the most part a flattish embankment surrounded by a narrow ditch, and at the North end, outside of the Fort, is a portion of rampart in excellent preservation, Surrounding the great rampart of stones is an earthen embankment and within it a ditch, Though the great mass of stones are now much disarranged yet their order can still be plainly seen, Inside the Fort is a beautiful grassy flat dotted with a few tufts of heather, Inside is a nearly rectangular figure, nearly flat with the ground, and the well, still some

feet in depth, but filled up with stones and rubbish, is still there. The space contained within the Inner, or principal rampart, is of small extent, comprehending, however, within its area a rectangular praetorium, which is not usually met with in works of this kind, But the most extraordinary thing which occurs in this British Fort, is the astonishing dimensions of the rampart composed entirely of large loose stones, being at least 25 feet thick at top, and upwards of one hundred at bottom.......... there is another double intrenchment running round the slope of the hill, The intermediate space probably served as Camp for the troops, which the interior post, from its smallness could only contain a part of, The entrance to this is by a single gate on the East end, but opposite to it there are two leading through the outward intrenchment, between which a work projects containing some pen posted there as an additional security in that quarter," General Roy's Work on Antiquities |

"The cluster of so called barrows near the Church of Menmuir are commonly attributed to the Picts and Danes, Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] ........ It is certain that these barrows have an artificial look but perhaps this is the amount of the matter and we are not aware that they have ever been opened, or that any warlike or domestic remains relating to prehistoric times have been found in their vicinity. It is true that on disinterring a stone Coffin a few years ago in the Cotton Muir, at a short distance from these barrows, a flint spear head was found in it as large as a man's hand........... A thin bronze hatchet was also found near the same spot"

An irregular cluster of houses all the property of J. C. Arbuthnot Esqr. This name is of ancient origin, and is said to have been given in commemoration of the Earl of Crawford, surnamed the Tiger having wreaked his vengeance here on Collace, Laird of Balnamoon, for his treachery at the Battle fought between Crawford and Huntly on the Hill of Stracathro, in 1452. |

"The church of Menmuir was in the diocese of Dunkeld, and dedicated to St Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne, whose feast is held on the 31st. of August. A fountain near the church, now lost by drainage, long preserved his name in the metamorphosed form of St Iten and was believed to perform miraculous cures on such as were afflicted with Asthma and cutaneous diseases"
Land of the Lindsays
"It should seem, not only from legendary report, but from a fine spring which still goes by his name, that in the times of Popery, the Church here had been dedicated to St Aidan, which appelation was also given sometimes to the parish itself. This holy man was British; his name appears in some of our Kalendars; he flourished in the 7th. Century " Old Stat [Statistical] Account
The place where the well was can be seen in the hollow which it has left. The water issues from a spout at the roadside, of which some care seems to have been taken as it is built round. |

This is a very old property and referred to in the Perambulation in 1450 of the Marches of the Bishoprick of Brechin. The western part of the mansion house is old, but the Proprietor is ignorant of the date of its erection - a tablet with the date 1584 is built into the back wall, but it was taken from a detached circular tower with staircase, adjoining, when it was removed. Mr. Carnegy Arbuthnot thinks there are evidence of a moat having surrounded the house. |
