[Statistical] Account Revd [Reverend] Mr. Reid Mr Scott Bonnyton Lord Southesk New Stat [Statistical] Account Old Stat [Statistical] Account Fullarton's Gazetteer 035 "Maryton Law is a considerable eminence founded on a rock 300 or 400 ft. [feet] high. It is evidently artificial & probably in old times was either an alarm post, as it commands an extensive view both of sea & land, or a place where the great family of Montrose administered justice to its vassals." New Statl: Acct. [Statistical Account] The name & the Law are well known but of its origin there is nothing to be ascertained beyond what is stated in the extract quoted above. The Revd [Reverend] Mr. Reid is inclined to believe that it was a "Gallow Hill" as conjectured in the N.S. Acct. [New Statistical Account] The mound which is between 15 & 20 feet high and of the circumference at top & bottom as shewn on the Examination Trace, is very regular, never having been disfigured or broken into. The Earl of Southesk considers it most likely to have been the place of Execution for the lordship or Barony of Old Montrose
