[Situation] South eastern portion of the county
Two parishes united in 1618 but lying contiguously the one in Forfarshire and the other in Perthshire. Each has its own church its Kirk-session its poors' box and its session register and its school and likewise possesses some distinctive peculiarities. Lundie is about 3 miles long varies in breadth from about 1½ to 3 and the area is supposed to be about 3;258 acres, and is bounded on the north by Newtyle on the east by Auchterhouse on the south by Fowlis and on the west by Kellins. Along the north and west the surface is part of the Sidlaw hills, heathy on the higher grounds but verdant and rich in pasturage on the southern Slopes. The central and southern sections are champaign and the soil productive Fowlis has a triangular shape and measures about 3¾ miles on its north side 2¼ on its east side and 4¼ on its S.W. [South West] side. Its area is said to be about 1;944 acres. It is all in the Co. [County] of Perth and is bounded on the north by Lundie and Auchterhouse on the east by Liff and on the south-west by Liff and Longforgan. Black Law in NW. [North West] corner is the only hill.The general surface of the parish slopes gently to the south and is fully enclosed and beautifully cultivated. The united parish is in the presbytery of Dundee and Synod of Angus and Mearnes. Patron, the Earl of Camperdown. |

Yet each of these parishes is in
a different County & has the
usual parochial school, poor law
board, Registrar, & Officer for the
poor in each parish & in all these
respects is treated as different
Parishes as well as in all
Civil & Sheriff business in
their respective Counties - Forfar
& Perth. A Sheriff's proclamation
for Perthshire would apply
to Fowlis & in this case the proper
name would be Fowlis Easter, but

[Baronet] M.D. [Doctor of Medicine] - a Cadet of the Duncan of Lundie Family; and at the East of the Vault is a Square open Inclosure the Burial place of the Family of Camperdown On a Marble slab in the W. [West] wall of this Inclosure, near the N.W. [North West] angle, is the following Epitaph:-
"Adam first Viscount Duncan Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty King George the Third's Fleet; born 14th. July 1731, and died 4th. of August 1804" |
