"A parish in the Grampian district of Forfarshire bounded on the north-east by the northern division of the parish of Kirriemuir; on the East by the parish of Kingoldrum; on the South by the parish of Airlie; and on the West by the parish of Glenisla. The parish lies in the outskirts of the Grampians, & is for the most part, a sea of heights above the level of Strathmore, of bleak, barren, and chilly aspect. Along the Southern boundary, & some way up the middle of the interior on the banks of the principal streams, are sloping belts of arable ground. The heights are, for the most part, heathy: & in the north corner, are wild and desolate. The River Isla flows for 5½ miles along the western & southern boundaries. Back Water rises in the north corner, traverses a deep mountain furrow or narrow vale called Glen Damff.

|
[continued from page 1]
"Melgam Water drains the east side of the parish. Lintrathen Loch, circular in outline, lies ¼ of a mile west of the Church."
"Fullarton's Gazetteer"
"The word Lintrathen is evidently of Gaelic origin. It signifies rapid lynn a term which is meant to apply to the waterfall near the Church."
"New Stat: [Statistical] Account."
The only antiquities in the parish are two large remarkable cairns, Standing Stones, two Tumuli, & the moat that surrounded the residence (or Castle) of Sir Allan Durward.
There are no detached portions of this parish, nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this parish. |

[Notes relating to Quharity Burn on page 46]
Glen Quharity not written on any of the Plans
Should it not be written?
Rises on Cat Law - flows southward and takes this from its source on 6 inch sheet 23
flows south down through 30/4 - and on 30/8 at Newton the name ends - here at Newton
a stream or Drain goes East - formerly called Carity Burn on 30/8 - 31/5 - 31/1-2 this
latter has now no name - on the authority of the Proprietor G. Lyon Esq. - as on page 46.
OMO [Ordnance Mapping Office] 19. June 1862.
Instead of flowing eastward
as formerly, the water of the
Carity or Quharity has been
diverted south by an em-
bankment at Newton.
[Initialled] J.B. Lt.Col. [Lieutenant Colonel]
The Carity being here supplemented by the
considerable stream coming down by Burnside
or the Knowheads here retains its old name
till its confluence with the River South Esk.
Mr Lyon is not the Proprietor here.
[Initialled] J.B. Lt.Col. [Lieutenant Colonel]
Glen Quharity This name has been restored at the particular request of the present Proprietor of Balintore.
(D. Lyon Esqre.) and is applicable to the Glen through which the Quharity Burn flows - the
name repeatedly occurs in the old deeds and writings of the property, and was written apparently to farms
of "Easter Glenquharity" and Wester Glenquharity. The name has been written on Sheet 23 Trace 12

New Statistical Account
Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Haldane Ph. [Parish] Minister of Kingoldrum
Mrs. Ogilvy Easter Peel |
030 |
The Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Haldane of Kingoldrum says that a ditch, immediately to the East side of the farmhouse of Easter Peel is the only remains of the Moat referred to in the New Stat [Statistical] Account that can be discovered. Regarding the Castle Mr Haldane can only say that tradition reports of such a building being where the farm house is. but he doubts its reality as no foundation was ever razed or found in the memory of any person he can find.
Mrs. Ogilvy wife of the present tenant of Easter Peel informs me that about 27 years ago the Moat or Canal (as she calls it) was more entire and could have been distinctly seen. There is a slight hollow on the West side of the house which she points out as the track of part of it. And is shewn on Exn [Examination] Trace |

the Castle? Therefore should not the name be written on Plan

"The only individual of any note that was ever connected with the Parish of Lintrathen was
Sir Allan Durward, who made a conspicuous figure in the reign of Alexander III. The greater

the Moat that surrounded it is partly visible. Vestiges of the wall which once lined his Deer Park

A small eminence on the farm of Purgavie, in which were some stone Coffins and Urns found by the late Mr. Fenton, father to the present tenant of Purgavie. "About ¼ mile N.N.E. [North North East] of the Church there is an artificial eminence whose summit commands an extensive prospect. On this spot a jibbet was erected for the unfortunate persons whom the servile court of a despotic baron condemned to death. Vestiges of the Hangmans habitation appear at the foot of the tumulus (cannot now be traced) and the name of a neighbouring plot of land perpetuates the memory of this infamous practice" Old. Stat.
