"The Northern or Grampian district of this parish is bounded on the North and North-east by the parish of Cortachy & Clova; on the South by the parish of Kingoldrum; and on the South-west by the parishes of Lintrathen & Glenisla. The whole district is hilly and mountainous, commencing on the south with Catlaw, the frontier mountain of the Grampians & the highest ground in the parish, stretching away North-westward in two screens or series of heights, whose inner sides form the basin of the Prosen. Every part of the frontier or boundary of the district, except a small gorge through which the Prosen makes its exit, consists of a water-shedding ridge of summits dividing the interior from the basin of the South Esk. The hills of the district in a few instances, rocky, & in a few verdant, except at their summits: but they are in general clothed in heath &c. Excepting about 2000 acres, partly arable & partly fine pasture the whole area is wildly pastoral or altogether waste."

Ordnance Survey Office

Sir,
In sheet No 24 of the Survey
of Scotland, being the northern Di
-vision of the parish of Kirriemuir
in the County of Forfar, there is
shewn, meeting on the top of a
Hill called "Catlaw", the bounda
ries of the three parishes of Kirrie
-muir, Lintrathen, & Kingoldrum.
These boundaries, besides being
the boundaries of three parishes,
are also the marches of three
properties, and between two of
these properties a dispute has
arisen to the precise bounda
-ry at the top of the hill, caused
partly by certain marks on the
[Righthand Column]
Ordnance Sheet, & which I think
some explanations from you or
the officer who made the survey
may tend to clear up.
The boundary of the Parishes
at the top takes something like
this shape.
[SKETCH]
The pole put up by the Royal En
-gineers, as indicating the top of the
hill, is at the point marked 2196.
The point 2186 is the old Cairn of
Catlaw which has long been recog
-nised as the point where the three
parishes meet. But apparent-

-ly the point where the pole is erected
is a foot lower than the point further north marked
2197 - & hence the proprietor whose land is in
Lintrathen parish maintains his right to run
up to the latter point. The Royal Engineers
do not seem to have been of this opinion, for
you will observe on looking at the sheet that they
do not bring Lintrathen nearer the point 2197 than
the point marked A on the above sketch opposite it, and from that point
they take the line round by the pole at 2196 & from
that to the old Cairn & so back to the point 2197.
If you could kindly inform me yourself,
or through the officer who made the survey, the
grounds upon which the line was so drawn (cor-
-rectly as I maintain) I think it might enable
a settlement to be made. The Marches of the
Estates must follow the boundaries of the parishes,
and if as I suppose the Engineers found it ne-
cessary to get round to the old Cairn as one of the
points in the boundaries I think a statement to that
effect, or an explanation of the reason why the point
2196 was fixed on as the top of the Hill, might prove
satisfactory. Awaiting the favour of your re-
-ply.
I am Sir
your obt servt [obedient servant]

O.S.O. [Ordnance Survey Office] London
2nd Novr. [November] 1871.
Sir,
In reply to your reference to the Director
General of the Ordnance Survey of 24th Octr. [October]
respecting the Parish Boundaries shown at the
Cat Law, I have to state that the Survey
of that district was made under my direction
and that I remember having scrutinized this
particular portion of Boundary on account
of the peculiar configuration it presented
and of being quite satisfied with its accuracy.
The peculiarity which strikes one on the
map is resolved when on the ground by the
natural features.
There was abundant evidence that
the old Cairn was the 3 Parish Point.
On referring to our records of this
Survey I find that John Hood acted
as meresman for Kingoldrum: James Barry
for Kirriemuir: and Alexander Edwards
for Lintrathen, and the Boundary was
pointed out without difference of opinion
to Corporal J. Felton. R.E. [Royal Engineers] (who was
an experienced and good perambulator)
on the 8th. August 1860. The Signatures
of all are in the perambulation Book,
which further bears evidence by the
signatures (among others) of John McNicol
of the Craig, Factor for Lord Airlie,
Duncan Wilkie (?) of Kirriemuir for Mr.
Farquharson; Charles Chree minister of

Lintrathen; &c. that the boundaries in
this district were well examined at
the time, as I know them to have been,
the Ordnance Surveyor (M. Harraghy)
and Examiner (Corpl. [Corporal] Black) were of
our best class of men.
I am quite satisfied of
the accuracy of this Boundary which
should not be disputed.
I am, Sir
yours faithfully,
(Signed) John Bayly
Colonel R.E. [Royal Engineers]
P.S.
You must not always suppose that
where the Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Stations are, consequent-
-ly indicate the highest point of the
hills. Various considerations connected
with the Triangulation determine the
position, and as a matter of fact,
the altitudes are not known until
after the observations from the selected
stations have been taken. The
particular spot where the Pole may
be fixed is quite arbitrary.

Kirriemuir (Continued) |
|
|
[continued from page 1]
"Kirriemuir lies at the north side of the extensive & fertile valley of Strathmore. The name is by some supposed to be compounded of two words, Corrie-Mòr, the large hollow or den; by others, it is said to be a Celtic word, which means the "large quarter or district". The position of the town on the side of a ravine or den, which extends nearly a mile in length, & is upwards of 100 ft [feet] in depth, supports the former derivation; while the latter may be supposed to have reference to the great extent of country which the parish embraces. The parish is divided into two considerable districts, which are separated from each other by part of the parish of Kingoldrum the one, the northern, usually called Glenprosen, is chiefly pastoral, the other, the Southern division is nearly square in form."
"New Statistical Account"
There is no portion of this parish detached further than what is stated above, nor is there any portion of any other parish detached within the boundary of this parish |

See description in Lintrathen Ph. [Parish]. This name is probably derived from Cath a battle and names near it favour the supposition, as well as a large Cairn of stones on its top such as were usually thrown over the graves of Chiefs or heroes. The names referred to are Monthrey and Cathrey Burn the former doubtless derived from Monadh Righe the king's hill, the latter from Allt Catha Righe The stream of the king's battle. |
