Description of Forfarshire 1682 |
|
[Situation] In the southern portion of the Co. [County] Forfar.
A parish in the centre of the southern division of Forfarshire; bounded on the north-west by Kinnettles; on the north by Forfar; on the north-east by Dinnichen; on the east by one of the parts of Guthrie; on the south-east by Monikie, on the south by Muirhouses on the S.W. [South West] by Tealing and on the west by Glammiss. In outline it approaches a circular figure and in measurement it is about 4¼ or 4½ miles in diametre. Although consisting principally of a little Strath, or valley yet none of its crowning eminences can claim the name of mountains Ascending gently on almost all sides from this valley the surface rolls upwards to the boundaries in soft hills. The soil in the valley is chiefly alluvial; on the high grounds is extensively a hard loam but in numerous districts is clayey or various Sandstone and gray slate abound and are plentifully worked. - This parish is in the presbytery of Forfar and Synod of Angus and Mearns. - There are no detached portions of

The site of a small Church on the farm of Mains of Easter Meathie the property of John Watt Esq: residing at St. Andrews, there are no records or traditions in the locality bearing upon its antiquity. Previous to 1682 the Parish of Meathie was annexed to Inverarity and the Revd. [Reverend] George Loudon is of opinion that it was dismantled before that period - there is no right of way to it. The extent of the old Church is easily traced being indicated by a slight elevated bank formed evidently by debris of the walls. See slight shading on Trace. There was a grave yard around the Church, but it has not been used for several generations past.
See Extracts annexed. |

"To the original parish of Inverarity, the adjoining
district of Meathie-Lour was added about two
hundred years ago. Both were in the diocese of
St. Andrews, and, after the reformation, were
served by one and the same minister; * and
the kirk of Meathie was "ruinous and decayed"

"The Parish of Inverarity, of which the estates
of Fotheringham constitute the largest part,
is formed of the old parish conjoined
with that of Meathie. The latter, as a parish,
was suppressed and annexed to the former
about the middle of the sixteenth century"

of Inverarity and Meathie"
[Notation mark]
The Kirk and graveyard have been identified and marked
on trace. The former fell into disuse when the two parishes were
annexed, which the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Louden, the present minister,
thinks to have been about two hundred years ago.

This name applies to a place on the South Side of Corbie Den where a church or place of worship at one time existed. It is not known at what time it fell into disuse but it is supposed to have been previous to the Reformation. Sylvester Gleg, Hatton, who dug up a part of the foundation, considers that there was a graveyard attached, as he, when ploughing the land around, found at different times quantities of human bones. The Revd. [Reverend] G. Loudon, supposes this to have been the parish church of Inverarity previous to the erection of the one at Fothringham House. |
