"The town of Forfar has been from time immemorial the head burgh of the County, & it was also the sole seat of the Sheriff Court until within the last few years, when a sheriff substitute was appointed for Dundee & its immediate neighborhood.
In the earliest notices that exist relative to Forfar, its Castle is described as a royal residence; and in the accounts of the Chamberlain of the Royal Household in the reign of Alexander III, & of some preceding monarchs, a charge is entered for the King's gardeners at Forfar. It is probable that the castle, the occasional residence of the monarch, & the residence of the sheriff of the county, gave rise to the fame of Forfar, & undoubtedly these circumstances secured to it its privileges as a Royal burgh. Nothing is known of the date of its original charter, but it was a burgh before the reign of Robert Bruce, as the authorities of Forfar gave evidence During his reign that Dundee was a Royal burgh."

A small round eminence, on which at one time, stood a Castle the residence of some of the ancient Kings of Scotland. On the summit of the eminence there is a small round turret erected about 60 years ago partly from the stones of the Old Cross which had stood in front of the Towns House.
"In the earliest notices that exist relative to Forfar, its Castle is described as a Royal residence, and in the accounts of the chamberlain of the Royal Household in the reign of Alexander III and of some preceding monarks a charge is entered for the Kings gardeners at Forfar. The Castle was destroyed in 1307." New Stat. [Statistical] Account.
"The Castle stood on a rising ground to the north of the town, and appears from traces of it which existed, half a century ago, and from the amount of its conjectured delapidation in building the modern town, to have been very extensive. A figure of it cut in stone remains upon the old market cross, and forms the device of the common seal of the burgh."

[Additional note]
From Jervise's Memorials of Angus & Mearns 1861
It may be inferred with much plausibility that the reported Castle of King Malcolm and whose Queen was born and
Educated in England had stood upon the Inch while the more recent Fort occupied the Castle Hill: That hill is
a conical mound on the north East of the Town upon which also were the remains of a Castle - the mound is about
50 feet in height, had at one time been moated, and upon it was placed some years ago a picturesque tower."
