013 A ruin situated about 10 chains west of the old farmhouse of "Shanno", which stands upon a prominent and cultivated eminence, on the west side of "River North Esk" about a mile north of "Auchmull". It is about 46 feet long and 20 broad, the walls only remain and are about 3 feet thick and 4 ft. [feet] in height. There has apparently been an enclosure on the south side, but now used as a Sheep Ree. "Young Edzell fled from justice, and took up his abode in the Castle of Auchmull, Invermark, and Shanno, all situate in Glenesk, and in points so difficult of acess, particularly the last mentioned, that he contrived to evade his pursuers for a considerable period. His father was prohibited from sheltering him under heavy penalties, and it was on his being hunted from Auchmull and Invermark, that he erected the fortalice at Shanno which is known synonimously as the "Castle" and "Auldha'", and of which foundations still remain on the hill side to the west of the farm house."
