[North East] The principal part is bounded on the north by Liff Mains and Murroes, on the east by Monifieth, on the south by the Frith of Tay and on the west by Liff It is of an elongated form stretching from east to west broadest at the east end and narrowest at the middle, and it measures diagonally from Ninewells on the south-west to Saltside on the north-east about 6¼ miles and has an average breadth of 1½ to about 1¾ miles. The detached part is bounded on the west by Tealing, and on all other sides by Murroes. The surface of the parish rises with an easy ascent from the Tay behind the burgh it swells somewhat suddenly up and forms the conspicuous

[Situation] In the west side of the parish of this name and east part of the parish of Liff & Benvie
A royal burgh, an extensive sea port and is the third town of Scotland in point of population and the first in the rapidity of recent increase in prosperity, it is pleasantly situated on the north side of the estuary of the Tay about 10 miles above Buddonness at the embouchure of the river It stands in 56° 27' 33" north latitude and 3° 2' 55" longitude west from the meridian of Greenwich and is distant 22 miles east from Perth 14 south from Forfar 17 south-west from Arbroath and 42 miles by way of Cupar from Edinburgh. It occupies chiefty a stripe of ground along the base of an acclivity and seems pent up by Dundee Law and Balgay Hill and the elevated ground adjoining, but it is increasing of late years very rapidly along the shore both east, &. west and also over the lower part of the high ground to the rear or north side of the town. It contains a number of excellent buildings although many of its streets are irregular narrow and ill built. It possesses a very commodious harbour and dock and has according to late accounts, between three and four hundred vessels belonging to its port. For

the size of the town it contains a very large amount of manufactories chiefly engaged in the manufacture of coarse fabrics made from Flax, Hemp, Tow and Jute. It has six or seven banking establishments. There is a good deal of work done in ship building and several other branches of industry. The town is situated partly in the parish of Dundee and partly in that of Liff and Benvie. With regard to the established church the town is divided into a number Quoad Sacra Districts or parishes having their respective Churches and ministers, but nearly all these Churches with their respective ministers and Elders are nearly on the same footing as if they belonged to Quoad Civilia parishes similar to those of the same class in the City of Edinburgh and some other towns of Scotland. Of the early history of the town very little is known, but from reference to historical events it may be presumed that there was a town here as early as the reign of Alpin King of the Scots who ascended the throne of Scotland in the year 831. In subsequent ages it figured prominently as a place of importance with respect to trade and Commerce, and in modern ages it was involved in or took a very conspicuous part in all the public transactions or events. It was involved in the disasters of the Succession Wars Took a leading part in the Reformation, suffered severely in the wars of the Commonwealth and its inhabitants at the present day are remarkable for a spirit of enterprise as regards Trade Commerce, &c, |

Church of St. John the Evangelist of the Slate Heughs (Continued from page 25) |
|
|
[continued from page 25]
"This church was situated upon a rock a short distance east of Carolina Port at about a mile and quarterly nearly from the High Street. Immediately on the south side of its site there is a quarry which seems to have furnished a kind of coarse flag-slates from a remote period and hence the designation of the Church "St. John of Sklethewchis" or Slate quarries to distinguish it from Churches dedicated to the honour and memory of the Evangelist at other places. The time of its erection and the name of its founder are both unknown neither is there anything Certainly known in so far as we are aware of its fixed endowments beyond what is contained in the ancient Rent Roll of the town's property. These endowments amounting to the trifling sum of £8.3.11 were derived from seven owners of house property in various parts of the town but as the church was a parish church and the parish had most likely comprehended the estates of Cragie and Wallace-Craigie the prædial and other ecclesiastical burthens affecting the land would of course contribute to make the living at least respectable.
In the Course of last Century and perhaps earlier the Church-yard open and neglected was used as a place of interment for seafaring people not belonging to the town for strangers and for those whom accident or violence brought to a premature end. It was also the family burial place of the Kyds formerly desinged [designed] of Craigie, who acquired that estate about or before 1660 and as a place of interment it is still used particularly by the present family of Craigie (who erected a vault in 1829 at nearly the centre of the ground) and by several other families possessing a right of sepulture within its precincts either as fewars of parcels of the lands of the lands of Craigie or by purchase. The area is limited a large part on the south side having been quarried away many years ago but what remains is substantially enclosed and beautifully planted with ornamental trees and shrubs. The Church would seem to have stood a few feet to the North-east of Craigie's vault. In digging two graves in May & June 1844 at the spot several courses of strong mason work were dug up and in no other quarter of the ground was any obstruction of the kind ever met with." [Situation] On the south side of Broughty Ferry Road.
This applies to the place where a Chapel or place of worship once stood. It is said to have been erected in or near the Centre of a smal Burial ground which stands on the south side of the Broughtyferry Road, but at what time it was erected or when it was demolished Could not be ascertained
"This Chapel was situated upon a rock a short distance east of Carolina Port but all records regarding it are buried in obscurity. Its original appelation was Kilcraig, from Kil — a place set apart for religious worship and interment drawn from the settlements of the Culdees — and Craig a rock upon which it was situated. + + + + + + + + + + + The imposition of the modern name of Haly Rood or Holy Rood from which the place has now the name of Rood Yard is owing to the Romanists after they had displaced the original possessors The Chapel Yard was formerly used as a place of interment for seafaring people strangers and those whom accident or violence brought to a premature end and it is still used as such by the family of Craigie who lately erected a vault there, and by several others who possess right of sepulture within its precincts. - Though we have called this a Chapel, it is not improbable that it was a Church, the pristine characteristic difference betwixt them being that a church possessed a burying ground and was entitled to administer the sacraments." + + + + + + + + +
