054 | [Situation] On the south side of Nethergate nearly opposite the end of South Tay Street A very neat & well built Church in the perpendicular Gothic style of architecture erected by the Roman Catholics in 1836. It affords accomodation for 1400 persons, 600 of the sittings are free and the number of Communicants is 4300. In connection with the Church is a school in which 1200 Children are taught reading & writing & instructed in the tenets of the Church of Rome. The ministers salary is ad secundam, arising principally from the voluntary offerings of the Congregation and the school is supported by the members of the Church & its followers on the same principle. The Church is dedicated to St. Andrew & is supposed to be built partly on the site of a Convent of Mathurine or Red Friars founded in the year 1392. |
