054 [Situation] Near the south end of South Tay Street.
This port or gate, the site of which was pointed out by Mr. Reid and by Mr. J. Thomson and also as shewn on Crawfords plan of Dundee stood nearly adjacent to, or a few feet west of the hospital and was the entrance to the town on the west side after the town was fortified by a wall and ditch in 1547.
Note. Tradition also speaks of an Inner Port and wall a short distance E. [East] of the above It is said the port stood at the south end of Long Wynd and that the Wynd is built partly on the site of the wall. But I have not seen any reference or mention of it in any authentic document.
