Nethergate (Continued) | [continued from page 51] In Nethergate are Situated on the South side the Churches of St. Andrew (Roman Catholic) and St. Pauls Free Church and on the North St. Marys, St Pauls & St. Clements, there is also on this side the site of St. John's, all Established Churches. The Street was anciently known as "Fleukergaitt" & appears to have been crossed near the junction of South Tay Street by the old town wall, the porte or gate in which at this point being most Southward & looking at the physical features of the ground in the locality, the lowermost; doubtless originated the present name of Nethergate. The gate here referred to has been removed, pulled down nearly 90 years |
