[North East] corner of the western Cemetery A very handsome semi mural monument of Gothic design erected to the memory of D. C. Carruthers M.D [Doctor of Medicine] and Mrs. M. C. Carruthers his mother. It is built in the form of a close covered porch and railed in front with iron railings. the graves being of strongly formed masonry or vaulted. It is situated at the North East Corner of the Cemetery

Carruthers M.D. [Doctor of Medicine] ) Vaults These words are written on trace and in Name Sheets but there are no authority given for the designation and from the description given in the Descriptive Bks. [Books] it does not appear to merit the designation Mausoleum Should it not be simply Carruther's monument, Dr. Carruthers' monument, or some such name? What is the popular designation for it? The designation mausoleum should only be given to monuments of a superior class. In the Descriptive Bks. [Books] it is stated that it is "railed in front with iron railings" Should not the part enclosed with the railings be a dotted line not a firm line all round as now shewn on the trace? [Royal Engineers] Major Cooke Dundee 26th April 1858 Sir, This was not erected as a memorial to Dr Carruthers, but was erected by himself as a family sepulchral monument; therefore it is not a proper name & should not receive a description. Mausoleum It is a magnificent structure one storey high & is termed a mausoleum by the Superintendent of the Cemetery. It is locally termed a vault It is superior to the generality of vaults. It is not railed in in front, but the entrance to it is an ordinary doorway & the door is composed of iron bars; therefore it should not be dotted. The Superintendent informed me that this is one of an intended range of vaults or mausoleums, that are to be extended along the northern wall of the cemetery, and that [continued on page 7B]

[Company] is situated on the North side of the Perth Road Enclosed within substantially built walls & laid out with much neatness, having gravelled walks &c. throughout & being planted with trees & shrubs. On its North side is an elevated Terrace running across its whole breadth which is appropriated exclusively for family and other vaults.
