The name of this parish seems to be taken from that of the Proprietor of that ilk. Others derive the name from the Gaelic Dunis, which signifies a hill or rising ground; and it is indeed, on a ground pretty much elevated above the River South Esk. The parish is bounded on the West by the parish of Brechin; on the north by Logie Pert; on the east by Montrose; and on the South & South West by the parishes of Craig and Maryton.
New Stat [Statistical] Account.
The only antiquities in the Parish are Dun Castle & the Old parish Church. The Scottish North Eastern Railway to Aberdeen passes through the Parish and a Branch of the same line to Brechin runs also thro' [through] this parish to the Bridge of Dun on plan 34.4 |

It is situated in the Park in front of Dun House a short distance east of the avenue leading from the West Lodge; Alexander Stevenson states that when a boy attending school (he is now a very old man) it was called the "Pit and Gallows" & the tradition was that the former Lairds or Barons of Dun had tried & executed vassals on it. |

A small eminence planted with wood, situated immediately east of Kirkhill. Messrs. Low & Balfour say, that, about 50 years ago a great number of human bones and skulls were thrown up by the action of the plough, and so late as 5 years ago, when Mr. Low was digging for some sand, threw up a wooden coffin containing a human skeleton. There is a small spot at the N.W. [North West] corner, the verdure of which appears more richer than the rest, and where, Mr. Low beleives that a church or chapel had stood. The fact of a chapel being here or hereabout is corroborated by the ancient name of Langleypark, which Mr. Myres of Montrose says, was Eccles John. The eminence was enclosed by a stone and lime wall and planted about 40 years ago by James Cruickshank Esqr. late Proprietor of Langleypark. |

"Slezer's view of the town says there was a jetty or harbour in the Basin of the South Esk near the Forthill (in Montrose). Such may have been the case but the long piled erection shewn in that engraving as stretching across the Basin from the back of Forthill, is clearly the Drainers or Dronner's Dyke which was

erected shortly before Capt. [Captain] Slezer visited Montrose. That Dyke was raised with a view to drain & make arable land of about 2000 Acres of the Basin which belonged in property to Erskine of Dun who disposed of it to certain parties who formed themselves into a co-partnery of whom the Earl of Kinghorn was one. That speculation turned out to be unsuccessful for the embankment had been scarcely accomplished when by a sudden storm, it was thrown down, & in consequence several of the projectors were rendered bankrupt. At Low Tides the Drainers Dyke is partially visible". Memorials of Angus & Mearns.
The Traces of this Dyke are yet plainly visible in a mass of large loose stones, particularly where it forms an angle in crossing the burn or channel on this Trace. It gradually becomes faint leaving a slight shingly ridge towards the terminations of its ends on the East & West. Traces of the same ridge apparantly, but not forming a continuous or regular line, may be seen as shewn on Trace at intervals towards the land on the West side of the Basin. Drainers Dyke is not generally recognised except by intelligent persons, but "Dronners Dykes" is well known & used by all referred to who know this. |
