"The parish of Craig comprehends two distinct titularities vizt Inchbrayock or Craig & St Skeoch or Dunninald; which were united in the year 1618, and appear from that period to have received the common name of Craig, which was formerly the name of one of the principal properties in the parish, "the barony of Craig": & may have originated in the circumstance of a succession of rocky strata extending along the whole of the Sea Coast, and occurring also throughout the interior, very near the surface of the ground"

An extensive wood on Rossie Estate the property of W. Macdonald Macdonald. A Reformatory School is situated on the South of it, & there is, near the Reformatory, a remarkable artificial hillock commonly called "Ginshot Hill" which more properly is "King's Seat", but the former is better known. Generally both names of the wood are referred to in naming it by the people. This is caused by the importance of the Farm names at the present time, Mountboy being the greater farm that name is always used; as "Kinnoul" is also given to the wood from being equally as old a name and about as near as Mountboy. The proprietor is of opinion that the names of both Kinnoul & Mountboy ought to be retained and when the writer of the New Statl. Acct. [Statistical Account]

of Craig refers to the height as Mountboy and the writer of Kinnell as "Hill of Kinnoul" it will be seen that custom does not rule the adopting of one of those names more than the other. Neither can it be said to do so in speaking except that "Wood" not "Hill" is generally used. There is a tradition respecting the origin of Mountboy, which is, that in former times, when the Ginshot [Hill] or King's Seat was the place of execution it derived its name from a youth about to be executed being told to "Mount, boy!". This is well known & attached importance to the name both of the Hillock & the wood, with the people of the locality. |

"Ginshot Hill or King's Seat" is nearly similar to the usage of "Wood of Kinnoul or Mountboy". Each name is well known, but "Ginshot" is more commonly used than "King's Seat" to the hillock. Neither of these names (the Hillock) are known to the proprietor but he considers that their usage is the most correct way to adopt in such cases. The writer in The New Statl [Statistical] Account speaks of the "King's Seat" and this is perhaps the original & proper name. No mention is made of these names in the work on Angus & Mearns |

An extensive and natural Basin connected with the sea, & having the South Esk flowing through it on its south side. It extends to the Parishes of Dun, Montrose & Maryton, besides Craig. At Low Water the general character of the bottom is blue clay softened on the surface like a muddy sand, which is the proper description, the Sand being caused by the washing over of the Tides. In some parts there is Mud to the depth of 6 feet ax [approximately] upon the Mussel Bed in this Parish. Sand is to be seen in Dun Ph. [Parish] particularly where it marches with Craig & Montrose at the mouth of Tayock Burn.

Some important channels run during Low Water which are well embedded in the ground, & have gravelled bottoms. These channels are numerous in Dun Parish; they seem to end at certain Level, for except Tayock Burn hardly any of them come from the land. The traces of a famous Dyke known as "Dronner's Dyke" is to be seen. It was built a good while ago by a Co who endeavoured to Drain & make arable land of a large tract belonging to the Parish of Dun - to Dun Estate, but according to the Memorials of Angus & Mearns, "the speculation turned out to be unsuccessful for the embankment had been scarcely accomplished when, by a sudden storm it was thrown down, & in consequence, several of the projectors were rendered bankrupt. __ The Basin was formerly navigable up the River South Esk as far as the Pier at Old Montrose, Maryton Ph. [Parish]. But it was only so to barge boats or small craft & passed up the river from the harbour by the "Inch Bridge" which is a Drawbridge. From this it will be understood that the River not the Basin was navigable to O. [Old] Montrose |

[This name [Craig Braes] is often] applied to the Cottages on the road side between the extent East & West of the Braes. The "Rossie Cottages" upon the authorities quoted opposite are named from the one Estate, while the Braes derive their name from the older Estate of Craig. Both are well known names & are adopted to their separate objects. In the Valuation Roll the name Craig Braes is wrongly given to the cottages, which are never by people living in them. |

A fine projection of arable land to the sea on the south side of the mouth of the River South Esk. Between the High & Low Water line at this point there are prominent flat rocks, & a natural bank bounds it on the side next the river. In Accounts (New & Old Statistical) this is called "Montrose Ness", and on the Admiralty Charts, "Scurdie Ness", names which are not used by any other authorities, "The Ness" being understood to comprehend all these doubtful terms. "The Ness" is upon Usan Estate, the property of G. Keith Esquire. There are three Beacons on the Ness, the largest of which is at the Point. It is about 30 or 40 feet high, & was formerly called a Light House, but for a good while it has been a Beacon and is now termed a "Tower" on the Ness. Of the west most Beacon, which is small, there is nothing known as to what purpose it served, for neither this nor the other two are for any use now since the "Annat Buoy" & the Light Houses on the Montrose side of the River are the Marks by which vessels steer up the River clear of the sand bank at the Buoy |

An old & well known name applying to a small creek or harbour on the north west side of "The Ness" point, near the mouth of the South Esk. This name, which has its origin from a person who saved a vessel here, has been duly inquired about as to its propriety and from the importance attached to the name, it is considered to be one of the proper names on the Coast which ought to be retained. It is generally known not like other numerous names which are given & known only to the fishermen of this Coast. Every rock creek & bay however small bear local names, and to adopt all would only tend to confusion. Those names adopted in the Parish of Craig, along the coast, are used & recognised by the proprietor as well as the officers of Customs in Montrose Harbour. There is a Capstan at the little harbour. It was erected to draw vessels off the Annat sand bank at the mouth of the river |

Besides this place of worship, there were others in the Parish. The Chapel of St. Fergus exists only in name; that of Saint Mary near Mary Mill so called in honour of the Saint in whose name the Chapel was dedicated; is now marked by the burial place of the Rennys & Scotts, late proprietors of Usan and within these forty years it was surrounded by a graveyard.

A large mass of dangerous rock partly covered at Low Water, but only accessible during the lowest spring tides. Ships have been frequently lost on this rock which would be better recognised as Silly Rock from this being the name lately given by the Coast Guard officially in Newspapers with reference to the wreck of a ship. It is generally supposed that Silly is a corruption of Sallow Craig. Its dangerous situation & the dark appearance of the place when the Tide rises confirms the origin of Sallow but as before stated Silly is much better [known.] Several will be found who do not recognize Sallow Craig when "Silly Craig" is at once pointed out as a well known name. |

"Buckie Den" has not been given to this steading in the whole course of the Parishes around while collecting the names. The name may most probably have been changed from Buckie Den Mill to the short form of Buckiemill. |

"St Skeoch, or St. Skay as it is usually pronounced, appears to have received its name from some of the northern saints. A very picturesque spot on the Coast is usually called the Chapel of St Skay, but no ruins remain to mark the existence of any former edifice. A small burying place is preserved around the spot, which is occasionally used for interments: & the site of the Manse (?) is still pointed out in an adjoining field.
New Statl [Statistical] Account
"The burial ground of St. Skeoch is romantically situated upon a cliff by the sea-shore to the south-west of Usan, and had doubtless originated in being the abode of a hermit or recluse of that name though nothing is now known of his history. The site is thus described by a talented local poet -
"St Skea's grey rock stands frowning o'er the troubled deep:
A structure formed by nature's hand,
A bridge with wave-worn arches plann'd
Whose echoing depth the surges spann'd"
&c.&c.
"In Roman times Sk Skeoch was the chapel of the Dunninald district of the Parish and the tithes belonged to the Priory of Rostinoth; but it appeared to have been expressed as a place of worship, either at or soon after the Reformation, for in 1576 it is said that Sanct Skaa, or Dunnynaud nedis nae reidare - It is still used as a place of burial, & contains some neat Monuments, among which are those to the memory of the late P. Arkley of Duninald & Dr. J. Brewster who was minister of the Parish from the year 1804" &c. &c. Memorials of Angus & Mearns.
The site of the Chapel is generally understood by the personal authorities quoted to have stood in the burying ground at the spot where the larger vault or tomb stands. The mode of spelling the name Skeock or Skay is generally Skea now as stated by Mr. Arkley, & Skay is according to sound. |

The Rock of St Skea or St Skay called "Comb of St Skay" on the Estate Maps is similar in appearance to an elephant's trunk. At its extreme point there is an arch through it at the bottom about 20 ft. [feet] high. It is a most remarkable rock 60 ft [feet] high or thereabouts & falls perpendicularly on each side while the top of it at one point is not more than a couple of feet wide which must be carefully walked on. Throughout the Parish & up & down the Coast the "Rock of St Skay" is known. It is never used as the "Comb of St Skay" as given on Est. [Estate] Maps |
